The following is an email that was forwarded to me from a prospective renter. I no longer post on Craigslist due to this type activity, however I do use realbird which syndicates to numerous sites. Not sure where he found the info to write his scam ad, but he did. He even went as far as to look up owner name on the central appraisal district site and sign it in the email. I responded to him and he will not answer the phone, he did however text me to see if I went to the home and had a peek through the windows to see it. This is very scary, as my actual listing is a pre-lease and is still occupied!
Subject: RE: Interested in House Thank you for taking your time to contact me, I am glad you are interested in renting my house, am looking for someone who can take good care of the house, since I relocated to another state due to my new Job and will be here for a while with my family, this is the third time am trying to get a tenant online the first time did not really go well and I did learned a lots, to be honest with you! I am handling everything myself. The first time I had an agent who I later discovered collected money on my behalf from a family and never gave them the keys and the lease agreement, THE RENT SIGN BOARD WILL BE REMOVE FROM THE HOUSE AS SOON AS I FOUND SOMEONE TO OCCUPY THE HOUSE, SO THAT PEOPLE WILL NOT GET MISLEAD AGAIN BY CONTACTING THE NUMBER ON THE BOARD, SO FOR NOW YOU DEAL WITH ME AND IF YOU GET TO CONTACT the number on the board, I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOSE, SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL, and also I wont be sending my keys without proper documentation am sorry, but the second time I sent MY keys and it took months before security deposit and rent was paid which I later told the previous tenant to leave without paying a cent so please this is why I have to handle things myself, am sure you understand. MY HOUSE IS AVAILABLE FOR RENT AND MOVE IN READY, so you are free to decide on how long you intend occupying it, also available on rent to own in future, you can go by the house and take a view through the window to see the inside of the house since the windows are not closed. let me know what you think after looking at my house, so that we can proceed with proper documentation, please note that I wont be accepting any payment without proper documentation. The ADDRESS of my house is: 309 Cedarwood Ln, Hewitt, TX 76643 The utilities covers electric, water, lawn, sewage, and other appliances like washer, dryer, refrigerator, Micro wave...etc I am a contractor so I got a project I would be working on for 3-4 years, so I intend buying a house here and I have already started working towards that and it has been great, the keys are here with me because I had to take them back from the agent that almost ruin my name and that is why you wont be able to get access into the house but sure you could go round the house and view the house through the window since they are not closed sorry for that and I do apologize, just did not have a trust worthy someone to leave my keys with, I will make sure the keys gets to you between 1-3 working days because I will be sending the keys via FedEx Secured Mail and would provide you with all the information you need to get the keys and other things if included.. so please let me know if you still interested in renting my house like I said the rent covers the utilities all I need is a serious and GOD fearing family, I do not need a rich and rude family please am not after anyone's money I can stay without renting my house out because I do not survive with it. Pet are allowed as long as they are not destructive. The rent is $950/ per month and the security deposit is $800. People beware!!! If an ad sounds too good to be true, it is! Think before you respond to ads or . Emails such as this. There are numerous red flags in this email.
