Things Generally Work Better When One Finishes the Job

By
Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050

As part of the inspection process for most States, inspectors are required to test smoke detectors for functionality. For the most part, current standards require smoke detectors to be interconnected so that if one goes off, they all go off.
As luck would have it, the first detector failed to work so I decided to check to see if it was even connected. Sure enough, it wasn't. I generally find that things work better when the electrician finishes the job . . . now it is up to the homeowner to pay for an electrician to correct what the builder’s electrician failed to do. So much for 'Codes' inspections.

And that my friends, is my 2¢’s worth for this evening. - M

Michael this is a good example of why home inspections are needed even for new construction.

Smoke detectors make me crazy - I can't figure out why the people who designed them had mush for brains!

When a battery gets low, they beep. So you take the darn thing down and replace the battery - and then TRY to put it back. I've had them hanging from the ceiling for days before I finally got the little parts lined up correctly on the 13th attempt.

And some think home inspections aren't necessary for new construction. You just never know what mistakes are hidden...

Hi Michael,  Your blog is another reason why I always recommend my Buyers to have whole house inspections, even when it is new construction.

Wish you lived in Austin, I just contracted a new construction spec home and it should close next month. I highly recommended to our buyer to get their own inspection for this very reason. Buyers need to always get a home inspection new or resale.

Pathetic and so typical.

I tell my clients that pushing the button doesn't prove the detector works, only that it sounds.  But not sounding is a different thing altogether.

Good morning Mike. Just a couple of thing missing with this smoke detector, good thing you checked it out to find the issue. That would make me check for what else was done in this manner.

I do not believe they are connected in here. And it is a good thing, since it can make anyone mad when they start beeping. ( for those who cook, they would understand:)
