My husband and I love going to the Farmer's Market on the weekends during the Summer, sometimes with the kids and other times without. We gather up our recyclable grocery bags, get some cash, and head out to see what that week's bounty brought in.
This weekend was no exception. On a very hot and steamy Sunday, we joined the vendors and shoppers at the Piney Branch Elementary School parking lot to pick up fruits and vegetables for the week. Prices are fairly competitive with local grocery stores, and there is a pretty decent selection to choose from. Not only do you support local farms, but you also get delicious seasonal produce that in some cases have been picked the day you buy them!
This week brought so many wonderful options! Succulent white and yellow peaches that were ripened perfectly, nectarines, mouth-watering tomatoes in many varieties and sizes, sweet watermelons, fresh basil and cilantro, summer squashes bright with color, onions, jalapeno peppers, red and white potatoes, and so much more. The booths were awash in rainbows of gorgeous color.
Spend some time wandering the tables to grab samples and to talk to the great people working them. This Farmer's Market also offers kettle corn, gluten-free desserts, homemade sausage, free-range and grass-fed meats, dairy items, breads, baklava, hummus, and more. Go at lunchtime and get a plate of BBQ, which is smoking in front of you. Delicious!
The Piney Branch Farmer's Market is open Sundays from 10:30-2:30 year round. Many of the vendors take plastic, but it's a good idea to bring cash for those that don't. There are many Farmer's Markets in and around Prince William County. Take advantage of them while you can!
