ASK AN AMBASSADOR: Don't Read This Post!!!
...unless you want to know more about the importance of titles to your post!
In some ways, deciding what to title your post might be the most important part of writing your post. That title may be your first and ONLY chance to get the reader to click and read.
The wrong word selection gives a false impression, or creates a negative attitude right from the start. You probably want to provoke, to intrigue, and maybe sometimes you DO want to agitate! Sometimes a little bait and switch is in order too :)
Of course the intended audience provides or removes flexibility. If we're writing about Lebanon Ohio Homes For Sale With A Barn, about the only question we have is whether to include the zip code in the title. The rest of it is pretty much dictated by satisfying the bots and letting the consumer that is searching know that they found EXACTLY the home search they wanted. Getting cute with a title most likely pushes us down the pages of search engine results, so we'll be standard in our approach.
But if our intended audience is other Rainers, well then it's time to turn on the creative juices and do everything we can to get the reader to STOP, CLICK, AND READ.
Why did we title this post "Don't Read This Post!!"?
HA!! We're dealing with real estate agents, and the surest way to get them to do something is to tell them they CAN'T! It's like waving the red cape in front of Toro the Impaler at the bullfight!
Face it, if you've been on Active Rain any length of time, you go down your subscribed, featured, or general blog roll scanning titles and going NO, NO, NO....Hmmm, this one sounds interesting, CLICK!!
Admit it, have you ever found a blog post title with the word SEX in it that you DIDN'T click?? And Yahoo News knows if they post any title with the words Bieber, Gaga, Kardashian or Honey Boo Boo that they'll get traffic.
So if you title right, you get the click! Now all that said, a great title without the meat of a good blog post becomes like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". If readers figure out that you're not giving them the good stuff after they click, they'll be bouncing right out of there. Make a habit of not providing good content to go with a good title and the readers will stop clicking on even the best titles.
And don't forget some eye candy too because a wall of words trumps a great title every time!
And one side note: the Active Rain spell checker does NOT check the title, so be extra careful there!
So the nutshell of this post: spend some time on your titles! Take that few extra minutes to mull it over and then give it your best shot!
