Fear of the Unknown
Recently, I've had to undergo a few medical tests that I was unfamiliar with up to this point in my life. One was last week and the other today. I can not tell you the amount of energy wasted on the worry about how long the tests would last, trying to determine what they would feel like and if I would be okay. With both behind me, I can say, my mind made them both ten times worse than they were.
The fear of the unknown gets us all, whether it is with medical tests or selling your home. What I have loved about working with my medical professionals is that they have the knowledge and bedside manner to reassure me when undergoing that new test. They make it a snap. You wonder at the end why you were so worried.
What was NOT helpful is talking to 99% of my friends and family. Everyone has someone in their life that had this or that test and the tales can get pretty bad. That's part of what builds up the expectation of doom when facing the unknown. Some people have really low tolerances for discomfort, or just blow things out of proportion.
In real estate, asking friends and family advice, rather than your agent, can lead to an expectation that may not be met. I can not tell you how many times a friend or family member bragged about how much they got when they sold, or how little they paid when they bought, and a simple search in the MLS or tax records reveal they are not being completely truthful.
When it comes to medical testing, talk to your doctor and nurses. When it comes to real estate, talk to your agent. You don't want to spend time going over a scenario that isn't likely to happen. Stick with the professional and let them do their job and help you through the process.
