Paul I had to smile when I saw the staircase and your saying.  When I started back hiking a month or so ago I started slow so I could build up again. One day I was in the zone and went much further (by 2 or so mile more) and there was a slightly big trek up a short (tiny) hill.  I looked up and thought - crap can I do this?  I did one step at a time and it felt great!
