The HVAC Return Grill Was Screwed In Place And Painted Many Times

The HVAC return grill was screwed in place and painted many times.

What would that say to you?

That the filter had not been replaced in quite some time.

And  I was not disappointed.

Peeking through the little slots I could see what looked like a wool blanket.

The camera was able to capture a bit of it.

This is a problem!

Modern HVAC systems require, demand really, a lot of air flow.

Without that they are not efficient and your energy dollars will fly away.

What should be there instead of the screwed on, difficult to access, and therefore painted many times, return grill cover?

Exactly.  A grill cover that facilitates entry and filter replacement or cleaning.

I found one on line for $22.  They are not expensive.

And they screw on very easily.

The filter is easily accessed and handled.

And air flow is preserved.

My recommendation:   people don't know what they don't know.  And a home inspection can reveal even the simplest things.   Sometimes the solution to something is easy as pie.  This was one such case.  And the HVAC system, not to mention the energy budget, will appreciate this simple fix to an egregious problem.  You're welcome.

Good morning Jay. Sounds like not only replacement of the filter and easy access is required, but a systems check may be in order to see if any other damage had been done! Enjoy your day!

It looks as thought they also painted it with the system in operation to give it that grainy effect

Wayne - this location is in the wall right behind the unit, so with the filter removed one could see right into the lower box and blower.  So, you're right.

Ed - hard to know how or when it was painted.  But the screws had more than one coat on them!

Anytime Gita.

Well if they painted the grill with the filter in place, can you imagine how restricted the airflow must be.  And that is before you add all of the dust particles!

At the furthest point from the unit, it had very little air flow, Stephen.

It's hard to get air through a blanket!

I wouldn't mind it so much if the painting contained the right colors, S&D.  And we both know which two colors that would be.
