Should Landlords Be Tax Collectors?

There is a bill in the MA legislature that proposes to require landlords, homeowners who rent their property for any length of time, to collect a new tax.  The new tax could be as much as 18% of the rental for some owners. If you are a homeowner who is renting property short term using online sites, you probably want to read this bill.

This is MA House Bill 3454 . It is 14 pages, so it is not a long read. There are definitions for Short Term Rental, Tourist or Transient Use, Hosting Platform, and many other terms. The Cape and Islands Board OR Realtors and Cape and Islands MLS President has written a response to a Cape Cod Times article. Greg Murphy's letter to the editor can be found here: http://cciaor.com/cape-cod-times-rebuttal-homeowners-are-not-tax-collectors/

If you are renting your property on Cape Cod using a hosting platform, it is worth your time to read the article. If you are renting property on Cape Cod for your vacation, it might also be a useful read. Then don't forget to voice your opinion.

Thank you for reading.
