The Non-Designer's Design BookWhy do some ads pop off the page and others go unnoticed? Most real estate agents don't have clue.  They waste thousands of dollars on marketing materials and advertising that are not living up to their potential.  Problem is, most of us don't have an eye for great graphic design.  And let's face it, more than a few of us think there is nothing to it.  Just mix up some fancy fonts, a couple of pieces of clip art, a we've created a masterpiece.  NOT!

It's time for a makeover and I can think of no better book to help you do just that than Robin Williams' "The Non-Designer's Design Book".  This book is for those who want to know more about design but don't have the time or desire to actually study it.  With clear examples, Robin shows even the most challenged why some things work and other don't.  I'll make a bold statement here; you can literally thumb through the pages of this book, glance at a handful of examples and in less than 5 minutes see how your stationery, property brochures, advertisements and every flyer you ever sent out could be improved...a lot!

All with an understanding of just Four Basic Principles:

  • Proximity
  • Alignment
  • Repetition
  • Contrast

Robin will show you the basic purpose, how to get it, and what to avoid.  It's all so obvious once you've read this book you'll wonder why you didn't know it before.

You can order this here on Amazon and there are used copies for less than $4.00.

I take it that is NOT Robin Williams the comedian?  That would be a tough one to buy taking design lessons from MORK FROM ORK!

Thanks for the information on this critical topic.  No matter the experience, just about everyone in the business can afford to spend a little time tweaking up the marketing style.

This is so true.  Many go unnotices as they just fall into the background and are non descript.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing the book. Usually I don't even try to design my own flyers for fear that I will just screw it up.

Hi JL,  Even if you don't design your own flyers, this will make you a better consumer of graphic design services.

Joe - Hey I think I have this book somewhere or something a similar book by the same author.  This stuff is great.  It teaches you about about how to design just about anything.  I got the book for a graphic design class I took a few years ago.  Great points - no more than 3 , preferably 2 fonts and white space is a good thing.  Cheers!  Jessica
