Now that the weather is finally on track to get cooler, the more you will want to get cozy inside!  The last thing you want when lighting your first fire of the season is to inhale a billow of smoke not escaping due to build-up. There are dangers involved if your chimney and fireplace aren’t getting the proper maintenance.

Look for build up. Creosote is a dark black substance that surrounds your fireplace opening. It’s generally recommended that this build-up is cleaned once a year. If not all of the smoke from the fireplace is traveling up, it could be an indicator of blockage at the flue, or even further up the chimney. The mesh at the top of the chimney, in place to prevent nests and other pests, can get clogged with leaves and other obstructions.

Basically, if you are left questioning the last time you had your fireplace cleaned or hired a chimney sweep (if ever at all), now is the time!

From the fireplace experts at BrickAnew, is this helpful infographic about why Fireplace safety is important, and steps you can take to keep you and your home safe this fall and winter season:
