Thanksgiving is actually explained in some, if not many, school textbooks as a holiday for which the Pilgrims gave thanks to the Indians for saving their lives. Nothing against our native American friends, but that isn't historically accurate.
While the Pilgrims were appreciative of any help from their Indian friends, the purpose of the Pilgrim's Thanksgiving was to worship and give thanks to Almighty God for helping them in their belief in Him, for the Holy Scriptures God gave mankind, for helping them in their travels, for helping them form their new colony, and for helping them survive. George Washington's first Thanksgiving proclamation, when Thanksgiving became a national celebration, is where the true purpose behind that first Thanksgiving can be found.
Despite attempts at historical revisionism, one cannot escape the fact that Washington, along with many of the founders, felt divine inspiration throughout the entire founding of our country.
It is my hope and prayer that you have much to be thankful for during this Thanksgiving season, and are able to enjoy quality time with family and friends in celebration.
Happy Thanksgiving! May God bless you, and may God bless our nation.
