Several years ago I wrote a blog about my Front Porch Makeover.
"I was inspired by beautiful photographs of gorgeous topiary trees in planters on either side of the front door." I learned several things since that makeover...
Number one, it's not that easy trying to keep these beautiful topiary plants alive and healthy.
Surprisingly they made it through the hurricanes last year but the winter chill took its toll on them. So, it was time to replace the plants and try to correct a few of the mistakes made from round one.
Purchase New Plants...
The new topiary plants I purchased at Lowe’s. They were $30 each. One of the problems I had with the old planters was that they were too heavy. I learned that it is essential to be able to move these plants to get more sunlight occasionally and help with watering. The old pots couldn’t be moved that easily so the plants suffered from a lack of enough sunlight and not enough watering.
I purchased new planters which are a heavy black plastic and very light weight. When needed I can move them so the plants can get rainwatering once in awhile, and more sunlight.
Another option would have been to purchase artificial versions of the topiary trees but I preferred to use the living plants and try my luck again.
Here's a photo of Front Porch Makeover I
for reference and link to that original blog. After I wrote that first blog, I received an unexpected call from Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland who liked the blog and wanted to talk about it on her radio show. That call made my day and I wrote a blog about that too! The best part was, that blog was a featured post!
So what do you think? I think the new planters look better...
Please note...we are still working on this project. The porch deck needs painting but we have had too much rain to paint.
And, I am searching for a new door mat for the front entry. When you own a home, it seems like there are always projects in the works but homeownership is wonderful and a dream come true for many.
