Meeting your neighborNational Good Neighbor Day

You'd think that every day should be Good Neighbor Day if we lived by the Golden Rule. But like all things, we need a special day declared to make us aware and allow us to focus on being extra nice to our neighbors.. Not all neighbors are good neighbors or neighborly but this holiday is not about what you get out of it, it is about doing something nice for others. So be a Good Neighbor on National Good Neighbor Day, September 28.

This day used to be celebrated on the 4th Sunday in September. Three presidents, Nixon, Ford and Carter all made proclamations for this day to be recognized. The Senate passed a resolution in 2003 permanently making the day September 28.  National Good Neighbor Day is a chance for you to be a Good Neighbor and do a kind deed for your neighbor.

National Good Neighbor Day gives us a chance to do a little something extra for our neighbors. Many people today do not know the names of their neighbors. They don't have their phone numbers and don't even wave when they see them outside. Start planning now how you can be friendly or extend a kindness. It may not be anything more than going to introducing yourself and showing some interest in your neighbor. You don't know but that it might make someones day. Check out some of these suggestions below.

Smile or give a friendly hello or wave.
Invite your neighbor over for a meal.
Organize a block party.
Do a good deed or some act of kindness for your neighbor.
Have a conversation and get to know your neighbor a little better.
Bake something special and share with your neighbor.
If your neighbor is elderly or lives alone, spend some time with that neighbor.
Offer to run an errand or do a small chore for them.

We should all be good neighbors so National Good Neighbor Day is the chance for us to be kinder and friendlier to our neighbors.
