Video Blogging...Next Best Thing or Just a Gimmick?

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.  That was my advice almost 15 years ago to some one who had embellished their website with gyrating bullet points and flashing graphics making it look like the Las Vegas Strip.  Though cool looking and trendy, it made it impossible to absorb the information it contained so it failed at it's primary task.

What does that have to do with video blogs?  Well, admittedly, video blogs are cool and trendy.  I've been considering incorporating video on my blog and website which is why I'm thinking about such things at all.  I just had an epiphany while reading a newsletter from Internet marketing guru, Michael Campbell.  He had received so many negative comments from a video FAQ he posted he's had to reconsider video. The problem is viewers have to listen to a stream of linear content to see if there is anything of interest to them whereas a written blog allows a reader to scan an article in much less time.  His advice is to focus on a single topic.  When you use video keep it short, to the point, and educational.  I agree.  When I do incorporate video into posts, it will be when it illustrates a point better than the written word.  When it doesn't it won't be used.  And one more observation: if you're interested in SEO, consider there is no way Google or any other search engine can index the content of the video portion of your blog.  Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should still applies in our new Web 2.0 world!

Joe~ I have been considering the use of video myself.  I am still not sure about it yet either.

There is a loan agent here that is sending a video message via email. He has done a good job of allowing his personality to come across, where a written message wouldn't have been as impactful.

Good points, Joe--it's easy to become lazy and impersonal the higher-tech we become--I believe in a healthy balance!

Great post, Joe.  I've been thinking about video too - I have to say, for the most part, I don't really like finding them when I'm cruising around the internet, for the most part.

I've found that a website with lots of flash is slow to upload....I just updated one of my sites and I hate it.  It will have to be changed right a way.  Haven't tried video blogging yet.

Joe, I think that video blogging could be great if one knows how to speak and act in front of a camera.  And most of us do not.

I admit I'm working on my first video post that involves more than music and pictures. The video blog is a work in progress, but I do have to say when I decided to do it, I promised myself no post would be over 1:30 and would only focus on one topic at a time.

I agree with you about wanting to scan through a post for the information that is what you need, but at the same time some people are just more visual than others, this is why I plan to do one video version and one written version of every post that I do a video for.

Hey, just today, as a matter of fact, my home staging video was published on my About.com site for homebuying. I filmed a bunch of them back-to-back a couple of months ago, and the first just hit the web. I'm not really fond of them, and don't have the patience to watch them myself. But lots of people seem to like them. Hmmm . . . I should go blog about it.

I avoid video online like the plague....maybe to my detriment.....but I don't have the patience for it yet.. too easy to quickly see whatever I want to view..
