On June 18, 2019, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits up 0.3% to 1,294,000 units in May of 2019 from 1,290,000 units in April of 2019, but declined 0.5% from 1,301,000 in May of 2018. Single family building permits gained 3.7% to a rate of 815,000 units in May of 2019, from 786,000 units in April of 2019, and there were 442,000 multifamily building permits issued in May of 2019.
Nationwide housing starts lost 0.9% to 1,269,000 units in May of 2019, from 1,281,000 units in April of 2019 and down 4.7% from 1,332,000 units in May of 2018. Single family starts fell 6.4% to a rate of 820,000 units in May of 2019 from 876,000 in April of 2019, and there were 436,000 multifamily building starts in May of 2019.
Nationwide housing completions dropped 9.5% to 1,213,000 units in May of 2019 from 1,340,000 units in April of 2019, and lower 2.8% from 1,248,000 units in May of 2018. Single family completions decreased 5.0% to a rate of 989,000 units in May of 2019, from 937,000 units in April of 2019, and there were 319,000 multifamily completions in May of 2019.
