John Gamgee was born in Florence, Italy to Joseph and Mary Ann. His father was a Scottish veterinarian making it possible for him to attend a number of institutions. He studied in Italy, Germany and Switzerland. He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London, England.
In 1863, he organized the first conference of what would evolve into the World Veterinary Association. He later was involved in refrigeration technology.
What you may not know about John is that he developed the Glaciarium, which was the world’s first mechanically frozen ice rink.
