It's the Little Things

We have had a crazy amount of snow in Illinois this season. My snowblower has been running more this year that the past 3 years combined. Home inspections in Bourbonnais and surrounding areas have been a real challenge. Can't see the roof, huge drifts of snow to plow through and dangerously frigid temperatures have made this winter one for the record books. If you don't have a safety pack in your car when heading out, you are taking a huge risk with your life. The items we require the inspectors at SLS Home Inspections to carry are critical. Blankets, flashlight, handwarmers, extra socks, snow shovel, matches and candle, big enough piece of aluminum foil to melt snow in, extra gloves and hat, battery charger booster for the cell phone and storable food items like chocolate bars or granola bars. Any one of these items alone are not a big deal, in fact, they are just a bunch of little things. But together, they can be a life saver when needed in an emergency. snow in an attic

I had the pleasure of working with a certain agent more than once this winter that understands the challenges a home inspector in Illinois faces. At the inspection, the seller had decided that it wasn't a big deal to plow the snow out of the driveway. One of the rules of SLS Home Inspections is that we are never late. The street is our normal parking space, but there are plow regulations and you can get a ticket for parking in the street and blocking a snow plow. Seeing the seller had driven in and out numerous times on the driveway, it was assumed by us that the driveway was not a problem for vehicles. WRONG!! Inspection car was stuck, the buyer showed up and got stuck, and then the realtor showed up. She did not get stuck, she had a 4WD Jeep. Using the shovel we always bring, we dug out a short path behind the buyer, then our vehicle, then went ahead and did the home inspection, and when we were all done, she was able to hook up a winch and slowly pull our cars out of the driveway, without having to call a tow truck. It didn't take much of a pull since we had shoveled out a decent path, but the 2 vehicles would not have been able to get out, even after shoveling. At least not without a tow truck or 5 guys and an NFL Lineman pushing from behind.

I've said it before, the agents that show up at home inspections make such a powerful impact on the buyer and that helps the inspection go so much smoother. It seems like such a little thing but it makes such a difference.
