Self-care is all about being good to ourselves. It's about treating ourselves as well as we would treat others. It is the practice of doing things that improve or preserve our physical and mental well-being. There are many benefits to it including improved resistance to disease, increased productivity, better self-awareness, and enhanced self-esteem.  Treating ourselves like we matter can have great value.  


As we lead increasingly busy lives with many varied responsibilities it's easy to forget to put ourselves first, especially when we have others to care for. But the better we look after ourselves the better we are able to help others. 


Invest In Yourself


Self-care is different for everyone because we all have different needs. But anything we do that makes us feel better or cared for can be considered self-care. Looking after ourselves both mentally and physically is crucial to taking control of our health.


It's important to connect with activities that make us feel good, to find something that we genuinely enjoy and fits in with our lifestyle and beliefs. We can evoke positive emotions by spending time on exercise, meditation, hobbies, or any mood-boosting experiences that reduce stress. Just by reading a few pages of a good book, and there are many free books available by mail, it can offer up such joy giving a much-needed happy escape.


Stress has such a negative impact on the body and mind. The better our health the greater the level of our tolerance in the face of adversity. A good diet, improved sleep, and relaxation will all help us to build resilience. The stronger we are the better prepared for any unprecedented struggles or upheavals. It's essential to savor our daily experiences, no matter how dark our situation sometimes seems, there is usually a jewel hidden somewhere in our day if we choose to look for it.


The Value Of Introspection


By learning to appreciate the little things that bring us joy, we can add to our sense of fulfillment and well-being on a daily basis, this, in turn, helps us to cultivate a healthy mindset. The self-care mindset is one of feeling worthy and the desire to flourish. It's about wanting to be better and taking care of ourselves on the simplest of levels. It requires us to turn inwards, to find self-connection, and to begin to understand our body, mind, and emotions.


Small pleasures are essential in helping us to achieve our goals.  An elevated mood lends itself well towards a positive outlook.  It helps us restore feelings of happiness, fills us with energy, and helps us to gain perspective in order to pursue our dreams.  So we shouldn't let guilt chip away at the happiness our small pleasures bring us.


When we do positive things it can feel exciting and rewarding. But this doesn't mean there won't be times in our lives when we will wonder if we can stick with it – though habits we want to perform do tend to become second nature. Creating a self-care habit for ourselves when we're not used to putting ourselves first may take a bit of a mental shift. Making a change for the better can require a long-term commitment but the best way to get started is with baby steps. Practice and consistency will get us there.
