This graph shows the average inflation by decade compared to home price growth going all the way back to the seventies. The blue bars are the average inflation rates in each decade. And the green bars are the average home price appreciation. What this really tells us is that in most decades, housing has outperformed inflation. The big takeaway here is history helps prove that homeownership is a great hedge against inflation. So, if you wanna buy a home today, don’t let the latest news stop you. In the long-term owning a home is great protection against inflation.

However, with the current war against oil causing historic highs in gasoline prices, which is causing historic inflation, which is causing historic leaps in interest rates, some buyers are worried that committing to a mortgage is an unpredictable risk.

Contrary to the rosie picture painted in the media, Americans are worried about their diminishing buying power and worried that ominous dark clouds of recession are forming on the horizon.

But Americans should still hop on the homeownership train, but be prudent about buying LESS than they can afford just in case the current trends and policies continue to go unchecked.

I agree that owning a home is an excellent investment in the long term.  However buyers have to be careful not to blow their budget in emotional bidding wars, which are still going on .  Home prices may dip, but probably not drop dramatically.

It's wonderful to see young people get into a home.  I love telling them to upside to buying a home.  They can grow their estate with real estate; a place to call your own and make it their own; and they can eventually be a move-up buyer.  Great post!
