Floresville Tx in the Spring When Flowers Bloom

The Texas state flower is the Bluebonnet which appears every spring.  They blanket the roadways and are a protected species.  With it comes buttercups, Indian pinks and other spring flowers.  The amount of flowers will vary year to year and this year did not have a bountiful crop.

It is when the families bring out their children to take pictures in the flowers.  You will see many, many pictures of children in the flowers of that spring.  Some even get their pets into the action.

Back in the 80s we had a snow cover and the bluebonnets that year were the best.  Mom said it was the cold covering during the snow that affected the crop.  So when it snowed and remained on the ground back in our winter of 2021,  I was excited because I thought we would have a wonderful crop of spring flowers.  Didn't happen.

While the snow was not that deep for many people for people in South Texas it was.  We have only had snow on the ground for a day at the most in the last 50+ years.  This was deeper and stayed for several days.

The following pictures are from 2019 as the last few years the flowers have been less and gone too soon.  I was driving around taking pictures and ended up at the cemetery and was very glad I did.

Our snow in 2021:

City of Floresville Cemetery

The city of Floresville Cemetery was blanketed in Indian Pinks, bluebonnets and a yellow flower that I don't know the name of.  It was a glorious display.  The one surrounded by the yellow flowers is my grandmother's parents.  We still live on their land.  I was born on Great Grandpa's same birthdate and he died on my mother's birthdate.  For some reason I didn't take pictures of my grandparents and parents gravesites but they are in this field of Indian Pinks.  It is the cemetery that our plots are located in and many other family members.  Our roots go back to the mid 1800s in this area of Texas as some of Mom's  family came before Texas was a Republic.  My dad's mother was born here and  his father journeyed in a wagon from Kentucky in 1900 as an 11 yr old with his widowed mother and his 5 siblings.  As the oldest he was the man of the house.

The main highway in has some older properties. This is the median between the 4 lane highway.  It is a type of Phlox and was plentiful that year.

As spring approaches, everyone gets excited when the flowers first start to appear.  They don't last long but will be back again next spring.

Agree.  Around here we never know if the flowers will be good that year or not.  In the 80s we had some snow and there was an old, old wooden unpainted house in the field off Hwy 181 in a field of solid bluebonnets.  Took a picture of that and Mom had it enlarged and framed. But taken with the old cameras it isn't the best quality overall.

Absolutely something that everyone enjoys.  Just wish they lasted longer.  Grandpa loved to tell the old stories and I wish I had taken better notes.  Graduated from UofH so am a Cougar.  Saw a picture of some of the Shasta's in training on LinkedIn.   Spent several years working there.  Mostly downtown as I worked for the Texas Comptrollers Office in the old Main Plaza building.  Lived all over from NASA Rd One to Spring Branch area off Silber,  Alief, Aldine,  and the Heights which I loved.   Houston has changed so much since we came back home.  Get lost there.  Thought you were back in Texas.  But do you work in Florida also?

Thank you.  While I LOVE Texas, being close to family is the best.  Get to enjoy them more and celebrate the holidays without having to cut time short and be there in their elder years.  We got to be with mom and dad as their health failed and needed more care.  So think of all the memories you have by being close.

I wasn't that happy with the pictures as I compressed them and I think it affected their quality.  Went to the cemetery this year and almost no flowers.

Faye Y. Taylor ,

I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-ha" moments for the week, as I missed it. Loved reading about your family history and all the fabulous photos. I've lived in Texas since 1981 the second time and my daughter was born in Texas. I love spring in Texas..my favorite time of the year!

Dorie, Thank you.  I do think we are very prejudiced about our state flowers when they bloom.   Just wish the bluebonnets would always fill the fields.  Glad the highway department keeps the medians filled with the wildflowers.  We have none in our fields as Dad always planted peanuts or other crops and it kept the spring flowers out.  The only place is the field in front of the house with Indian paint brush.  Forgot to post those pics.   Maybe one day we will work on getting our own bluebonnets field going.

I've obviously not been in Texas at the time to see the bluebonnets! They are beautiful!

They are and when there is a lot of them it makes it even better.  Have never seen so many flowers in the cemetery before.  Have a good spring. It is beautiful where you are.

Hi Faye so good to see all the flowers!  Here in PHX we had an abundance of rain this 'winter'  - thus - an abundance of wild flowers everywhere.  It's so fun to drive around and see them all blooming, isn't it!!

That is really nice.   Doesn't everyone get excited when there is a nice crop.   Son graduated from ASU and he was so shocked when he first went because of the lack of grass yards.
