OpenOffice... what do you think?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Horton's Lawn Care L.L.C.

I have been thinking about downloading OpenOffice for a while now but not sure if it will do what I really want it to or if I should just get MSOffice. I have heard about OO, but thats as far as it has gotten, I haven't heard any good or any bad just the name.

Ok so what I am really wanting to know is mainly about PowerPoint (or whatever OpenOffices version is called). Almost all of my flyers for my business were created using MS PowerPoint on my old computer, but my new business laptop doesn't have MSOffice at all on it other than PP viewer, so my main question is.... With OpenOffice will I be able to open and edit my old flyers to update them with new services, and our website address?

Are the other programs as good or better than MS Office's programs and would you recommend it on a whole? What do you think about OpenOffice, likes dislikes and everything inbetween.

Well, considering the price, you can't lose.

I use Open Office but then again, I'm also not ever hooked on the bells and whistles of MS Office - I don't use the clip art, hardly at all; most of the time I'm inserting my own pictures or a graphic I've made myself.

I have OO on every one of my computers, I love it (though I don't use the Impress program much - Impress is the PowerPoint alternative).  I have opened other PP presentations in OO but since I rarely use it, I can't comment much on it.

I got OO because I needed to be able to open documents that customers sent me (when I was a web designer) but I didn't want to shell out the big bucks for MS.  I've never felt the need to use MS except for one thing - OO doesn't have an address book like MS, so if Outlook and the Address Book are important to you, then you'd best go back with MS. Otherwise, OO rocks!

I haven't tried to use Open office though I have an IT guy who has recommended it as a good alternative to Microsoft office.

I have found that you can open and edit the files. You might need to tweak a font here or a return there...but it works.

Karen- From what I have seen OpenOffice has some clip-art as well, and a drawing tool to make your own... could be useful. Honestly I have liked MS, and their products :-\ which is probably why I am skeptical of trying this free program. Outlook and addressbook are not needed for me, my yahoo mail works just fine and has an addressbook in it also lol. Thanks for your help :-D

Christine- Yeah I was the same way, heard lots of talk about it, and recommeding of it, but never really why it is so good... seems to be just because it is free which makes me kind of wonder a little. I think I am going to try it out, if not I can actually get MSOffice dirt cheap anyways lol.

Vickie- Ok thanks, I need to change things anyways so thats just minor details that would probably need tweaking anyways. Thank you for your help :-D

The clip art is nowhere near as robust as MS Office, but as I said, I rarely use clip art anyway.  I think MS Office is vastly over priced and have never been a fan of overpriced products where you pay for the name of a product that could actually be significantly better than it is.  LOL

I love OO and would never pay for MSOffice - I too do not use the address book nor do I need outlook - so OO is the cat's pajamas for me.

I use the Draw program a lot to create flyers (easier to work with than the word processer for what I want to do- Draw is similar to PrintShop or Printmaster - the only drawback is that it does NOT work with MS Publisher files at all.  So if you use Publisher, you will need MS Publisher.  Fortunately, I have never needed Publisher except for one or two documents.

Karen- I don't use publisher either, just word, works, and PP mostly. Yeah I am not a fan of paying top dollar for overpriced products either (luckily I know a guy for just about any program I want for next to nothing or nothing hehe lol) but I figured if OO is good I would give it a shot and it sounds like it is so I will try it out. Thank you again for your help and opinion on this.

I don't use either, but I've heard OO is pretty much as good.  Of course the price tag is much better at $0.  I've heard that unless you do some really extravagant things, you should experience no problems with OO.

I use OO, and have been quite pleased with it. Give it a try, If you don't like it you can uninstall.

Ronald- Yeah the price tag at $0 is definitly nice (although I can actually get MS Office for the same price lol). My use for it is actually fairly simple though as I primarily use it just for making and editing my flyers and other advertisements.

Leslie- Yeah I downloaded OO and while I haven't done alot with it yet I found that I was able to open my old PP files and edit them which is the main reason for even using it, so I think it will be ok. If not like you said I can simply just uninstall it and get MS office (main reason for even considering OO was I heard it takes up less space on the comp than the MS version).

I have to say download it! It is actually a better product than Microsoft and the best part is that it is free. You can do everything you do with Microsoft and in some cases even more. You also can even save it as a Mircosoft format if you are sending it to someone else who doesn't use OpenOffice.

Todd- Yeah I already downloaded it the other day, just haven't had much time or need to figure out all the ins and outs of it just yet. That is definitly good to know I can save as MS format if needed in order to send to others.
