Hawaiian Vog?

What the heck is VOG.  Well i'm sure that all of you have heard about smog.  VOG is our Hawaiian counter part. To put it simply, vog is volcanic air pollution. While it is not as ugly as the clouds found in many cities, it can have a major impact on people who live in the islands. The VOG originates on the Big Island of Hawaii.  The eastern side of the island still remains a clean air center but the western side of the island can be very bad at times.  South Point to Waikaloa at times looks like there is a forest fire going on.  Many days you can not see the ocean the VOG is so bad. State health and safety staffers will visit six Big Island school to see how well they're prepared to deal with volcanic emissions.

You are mistaken, South Point is beautiful. I live in Mark Twain Estates and most days we have clear skies. As I drive through often to get to Kona I can tell you that the VOG begins in Ocean View. Some days while driving through I cannot even see the ocean. It's really sad. But, Ocean View has clear skies in comparison to Kona. I was sitting at the light at Henry and Mamalahoa in Kona and I could not even see Holualoa. While in Hilo a couple weeks ago I saw the same thick sky, and it wasn't the rain clouds ... it was a haze ... like something I have seen driving through Las Angeles, only this is black in color ... LA has an orangish color to it. I have to tell you Bill, I am really thankful for where I live. I think we have less VOG than all of the islands and I truly believe we have the best place in all of the islands. I am looking out of my window right now at the ocean. It's bright blue today and the sky is blue and clear. Funny, we don't hear much abour the VOG on the local news, do we?

Aloha,

I am glad to hear you are experiecing sunny clear skys and I agree that there is no finer place in the island on the Island of Hawaii.  We truly are blessed to be living here.  I stand corrected in terms of vog.  The worst area is from Waikoloa to Ocean View. That stretch is the worst in all the islands. Check out this site and it gives more infomation on the vog.
