Searcy Arkansas city license plates. Did your town have them?

license platesThese small license plates hang on the wall in my kitchen along with lots of other collectibles (junk) and I have one friend in particular who covets them.  So I called him and asked what the deal was with these little license plates. They measure 10"x3" so they are much smaller than regular license plates.

He said that if you lived in the city limits of Searcy Arkansas, White County, you had to buy a license plate for your vehicle.  They cost $5 and his dad griped a lot about having to buy one just because he was in city limits and his uncle who lived outside city limits wasn't required to purchase one.  He assumes that the gripes grew louder and stronger as the years went by and they must have finally quit requiring the city slickers to buy them.  $5 back then would have been quite a bit of money!

My son collected license plates along with lots of other things so I've had these things for many years.  The dates are from 1937 to 1958 with numbers ranging from 158 to 958.

It would be interesting to know whether those numbers were for ones who lived in city limits with cars and indicate that Searcy grew from 158 to 958 from the year 1937 to 1958.

And it would also be interesting to know whether other towns had these required license plates.

Barbara - That's pretty interesting.  I bet those license plates are worth something...  :)

Barbara, interesting.  My town had no such thing. It will be interesting to see what other cities did.

Barbara, not only the price of these plates amaze me, but look how few numbers are on them. A small population in the old days.

Again, my memory may not serve me correctly but......I think you could choose your number on the license and ours was 543, which was also our telephone number.

Another time later than those Searcy licenses, the counties in Arkansas had a certain number, according to size.  Pulaski County as #1, White County (Searcy) was #13.   The license number would start off  13-00000, whatever.  This is true:  when we lived in NYC in the early '60s, we parked our car on the street.  When we came back, the car parked in front of us was an Arkansas license, #13.......   and bought at White County Motor Company, the same place where we bought our car.     I know I should have put a note or something on the other car but I didn't.  Just drove away and have always remembered the coincidence.

I suspect that if Mr Charles Buell does not mend his ways, before long, he will be pounding out license plates at some institution, and it will not be an institution of higher learning.

Nutsy, if you aren't careful you could very well end up being a number plate:)

Debi, I sold a lot of the license plates that my son collected.  I listed them on ebay and almost sold out.  I kept these, however, because they are unique and fit on my wall.

Charles, I'd like to know about other towns too.

Gary, read Anita's story.  The numbers were evidently chosen in some way.

Anita, good story.  I always wondered about some people's fascination with license plate numbers.  I never paid attention but evidently you liked and your parents liked seeing where the cars were from.  Thanks for info again!

Nutsy, Mr. Buell is already making some license plates, I understand.  But you have to win extremely difficult contests to win one.  He doesn't appreciate the simple folks with simple minds like me and you.  That institute you refer to may straighten him out.

Charles, someone is on your case BIG TIME!!

Hello Barbara, Some cities sell stickers that are placed on the windshields for city revenue. I have not ever seen metal plate like those other than state issued.

Charles, why are you behind bars????

Mary, we may be just "out-of-this-world" different.  But not anymore.  The citizen uprising probably took care of this over taxation!
