The future names of Avon Lake City Schools gymnasiums, libraries and other facilities could soon be in the hands of a group of city and school officials and community members.
The school board is considering forming a committee to create a process for naming school buildings and facilities to honor people such as the late coach Joe Bradley or alumni U.S. Army Capt. Michael Medders who was killed in Iraq.
"We'd like to have a group come up with a charter or guidelines so we have a set precedent that people can go by in the future," school board President Chuck Froehlich said.
Superintendent Bob Scott said the district wants to put together a naming committee with a good representation of the school and the community.
"We should consider mayor (K.C. Zuber), people from the Hall of Fame Committee and the pastoral society. The first thing we have to do is have the criteria, then the committee will make the decisions."
The issue of naming rights was brought to the forefront recently when students wanted to name the middle school gymnasium after Bradley, a coach who died last spring. Froehlich said, the district was recently asked to honor Medders, who was killed in Iraq last month, by naming a school facility or part of a facility after him.
"We want to put the community together to come up with a process for naming school buildings - naming rights for buildings and facilities," Scott said. "The idea is this would make a name of some very positive people. We want everybody to get involved."
