A conversation overheard

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Success Realty

I was in a restaurant for lunch the other day and couldn't help but to overhear a conversation that was taking place at a table next to me.  It was a couple, he is an agent and she is not.  He was telling her how bad it is "out there".  He told her that if things don't get better soon he will have to start looking for a job and he said at his age he most likely won't be able to get one.  He went on for several minutes telling her how he was doomed.

I had a couple of thoughts about this man and his situation.  First, I believe you create your destiny in your own mind, and then just as you thought, it happens.  It doesn't matter if it's good or bad, if you think it and you feel it you have just created it.   Second, what has been happening to this guy to put him in this state of mind?   I couldn't help but to feel bad for him.  I wondered what anyone could do to help him find the right attitude again.

Then his phone rang.  I was shocked to hear him say he didn't have time today to show the house.  When he hung up he told the lady that he just didn't feel like doing anything today.   I couldn't believe what I was hearing.   It seems he was going to make sure all his predictions came true.  No doubt if he does that every time the phone rings he won't be in real estate much longer.

I wonder, how often does this happen?  Good people get caught with the wrong mindset and find themselves creating their own worst nightmare.   I guess I am lucky.  I have had the wonderful opportunity to have learned from people that understand how this works.  Tony Robbins, Gary Keller and others that can really help people avoid or at least reverse career killing attitudes.

Is it possible I could have helped him by recommending a book or a CD?  I will never know if it would have helped him, but if this situation ever presents its self again I am going to find out if it can help others.

I've heard that The Secret is a great book...talks about this very thing, I think.  I haven't read it but I have a pretty good attitude (LOL).  Laws of Attraction at work.

I wouldn't have offered anything though - he was having a private conversation, and I would have been embarrassed if you jumped in and said "here, read this to save your career..."  LOL.

I personally don't feel sorry for people who "don't have time" to do their job, like this guy.  I don't feel sorry for people who resist the internet, insisting they're "Old School" as if that's some kind of badge of honor.  Either keep up with the pack or get out of the way...if you've lost your passion for it, maybe it's good to go and let someone else step in and pick up where you lfet off, with zeal and enthusiasm.

Karen,

You are right.  I don't know how I would have approached him.  I will have to think about that one.  Sometimes it feels like I have a duty to help other Realtors when I can.  But then again, they have to want to help themselves.

Jim,

I agree that "you create your destiny in your own mind, and then just as you thought, it happens".

I read this quote today and I loved it and think it fits perfect...

"I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances."

    Martha Washington

I read it on Tanya Venable's blog:  http://activerain.com/blogsview/802840/Inspiration-Never-under-estimate-the-power-of-your-attitude

Thanks for sharing, I hope you have  a great day!

Positive visualization is what I have always tried to practice, if all you do is focus on the negatives you will never get anywhere.  Sounds like this guy has made his mind up to be a failure, he is right, he is going to find it very hard to get another job with such a negative outlook.

Wow.  That guy needs to get out of the real estate business if he is complaining about how horrible it is and then turning down work.

If the guy was that down it was probably a good thing he didn't meet with the buyer, he wouldn't have done his job right for the buyer anyway. Not everyone has a great support system when times are tough. I think we owe it to one another to help when we can, I know I feel better when I do.
