One Kitten to Go... (in Concord, California)

As some of you know, I have taken in feral kittens to find homes for.  Spirit, a little Siamese, is with my sister now and becoming very friendly.  Less than a week ago I posted a craigslist ad and delivered Kiwi to a nice young woman who has the patience to handle a feral kitten.  She has reported that Kiwi no longer hisses at her, sleeps on her pillow at night and is wearing a collar.  Kiwi also likes the 3 little boys she lives with.  Just thought I'd share the good news.

It's hard to get a good photo of a black kitty, but here is Kiwi:

I am sad today, because I thought I had a home for Mystery, the little tortoise-shell who looks just like mama.  Mystery is quite smart and took a long time before being hungry enough to go into the kitty trap.  Now that Mystery is in the trap, the girl who said she wants the kitty is not answering phone or emails.  I put an ad on craigslist hoping for a good home today, but it looks like I put the poor thing through this whole stress of being re-trapped for nothing.  I feel very bad about it.

Take care everyone & wish me luck!

Hi Chris-I love your two kitties. They look like my Precious and Squeakers. Very cute. Hope they find good homes. I really think your Wordless W. pic is pretty. Who is the artist? :-) Have a great holiday

Pat - Thank you, I am happy the little black one has a good home and frustrated that today's drop off fell through.  Put the kitty through all this stress for nothing!

The artist is Papa Ntege in Uganda.  Rhiannon and I sponsor him so he can attend school.  It's the back of the Christmas card he made for us.  He's very sweet.  Only 5 years old!

Chris - Mystery looks like a cat I had 20 years ago.  She, too, was feral.  But she tamed easily and was an absolute treasure.  I do hope you are able to find her a forever home.

If the original person is not responsible enough to respond to emails/calls, then she is obviously not responsible enough to care for Mystery.  Just my $.02 worth.

Carol - I agree, I was just very disappointed.  Poor Mystery told me off though, soon as I let her out of the trap she complained to me for about 20 minutes.  Then she laid down by the door and purred.  Poor thing!

Hi Chris!  I had a calico cat like Mystery as a child.  I had her almost all of my life, she died when I was about 23.  She was very skittish and was afraid of everyone but me.  She slept right next to my head, by my pillow and she had the loudest purr.  When she died, I found it hard to fall asleep with the sound of her purring.  She would purr as soon as she saw me.  What a love.  Sometimes, I still dream of her.

Susan - That is so sweet!  Sounds like she had a very happy, long life.  What a sweet heart.  It's nice to have a special friend like that, especially when you're a kid.  I can't let my cat Fritz sleep with me because he purrs too loud and I can't sleep!

Hi Chris - when I lived in Fort Myers, FL I was very involved in cat rescue.  I rescued lots of ferals (you know the drill - climbing in sadiedumpsters, hiding out behind buildings waiting for them to be trapped, etc.).  I always had good luck rehabbing them and adopting them out except for one.  She just would not tame up.  I kept trying to adopt her out but no one could see her, touch her or get near her - not even me.  Took me three years to get her sociable.  So guess whose cat she is now?  Yeah, mine.  We've had her six years now and she's really a great cat. In fact, despite the fact that she has gotten really fat, my 7 year old daughter carries her around under her armpits, and she plays relentlessly with our chocolate lab.  This is a picture of Sadie.

I love torties - I'll be hoping for Mystery to get a great home!

Liz - She's darling.  She just wanted to stay with you, can't blame her for that!  Sweet thing.  Mystery was not pleased with me and told me off for about 20 minutes, then laid down by the door & started purring.  I am pretty sure Mystery will be easily tamed.  I just have to make the time.

Oh, too bad for Mystery.  She will get adopted soon.  There are so many caring pet lovers out there. Here is my Marci.  I found her at a vacant foreclosure.

Whenever I find a cat blog, I have to read all the comments before I comment because I know they'll be lots of cat pictures. Not disappointed.

I hope when you said "girl" you actually meant an adult who was female. My mom catches feral cats and tries to find homes for them and recently went through what you did. She thinks -- and I do, too -- that the "girl" that emailed her really was a little girl wanting a cat for Christmas. Once parents found out they just cut off communication instead of at least letting my mother know what had happened. Some parents are embarrassed at what their young children do, but it doesn't necessarily have to be that way. Children will be children, so just let other people know what happened, with an apology if it makes one feel better.

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in 2009.

Jim - She was an adult girl with a job.  I was sad, but I have found a better home for this sweetheart anyway, so I'm feeling better.  Next is Mama cat and a little surgery.  Almost done!

Great job on the feral rescue project! Your little wild thing will come around in time. How does your operation work, it sounds like you are getting help with the socializing, then after that are you finding other homes? And how do you choose people for both fostering and forever homes?  I was thinking about Craiglist but I wonder how to make sure the kitties will get the best home situation? And do you spay an neuter before you give the kitty up or do you get some kind of agreement from the new parents? Just curious I am working with a litter right now and am waiting for a no kill shelter that I really like to have some room. My kittens are about 5 months old and are not yet fixed. I would say that 2 are ready for new homes and 2 more are pretty close. We have one hold out that still needs more human interaction, she has improved quite a bit but needs some more time. Great job and have a wonderful new year in 2009!

Hi Maggie - Thanks!  Actually, I have had no help with any of this unfortunately and have been a little overwhelmed.  My neighbor keeps saying, "How can I help," but when I tell her what would help, she just doesn't do it.  So I'm just handling it.  What I did was just catch one kitten at a time and my daughter and I work with them.  Most rescues would already have them spayed/neutered before giving them away and then charge an adoption fee.  I can't afford it, so I just really talked to the people who wanted the last two (my sister took one, I know she'll do the right thing) and felt comfortable with them as pet owners.  I put an ad on craigslist and found the owners that way.  Now I just need to get my trap back from the last one and take mama kitty in to be spayed.  Then I am done!  I gave them a bedroom in my house, which is just a mess now, so I'm anxious to clear it out, clean it and start over decorating it for the new year.

Good luck with your fosters and thank you for taking care of them!
