Dear Client, Customer, Associate, Friend ...

By
Real Estate Agent with Casmi Photography

You know that your call is very important to me.  And I do hope that you understand that there are times when I am unable to answer my phone the moment it rings.

But, for the love of all that's holy ... PLEASE leave a message when you call

If you prefer not to leave a message, then please ... don't rip my head off when I do answer my phone.  I'm not clairvoyant, I don't have ESP, nor do I have the phone permanently attached to my ear.

You see ... according to you, you called me 8 times and I "never answered that phone" and you had something important to discuss.  Believe it or not ... I can appreciate your side of the situation.  But in return I would certainly appreciate it if you would understand that there are many, many, many times a day that my phone rings.  And sometimes I am handy enough to answer right away, sometimes not.

During our conversation when you said, "and it's about time you answered ..." it was all I could do not to lose my patience with you.  I realize that your situation is number one in your mind.  I get that.  But you really need to know that I deal with several people a day that believe that their situation is of the urmost urgency.

The simple lesson learned from childhood ... not everyone can be first ... applies here.

So ... in the future ... if you call me and get my voice mail ... leave a message.  That's the only way I'm going to know you called.  And if you're going to be kind enough to leave that message, please leave me a hint of what your call pertains to.  Just saying, "Hi, it's me.  Call me back." is not enough.

And, for the record, if I'm on the other line ... I won't answer.  If I'm 'indisposed' ... I won't answer.  If I'm with someone ... I won't answer.

Oh, and last but not least ... when I didn't answer the first time you called ... you can be pretty sure that I'm not going to answer 2 minutes later.  Or 2 minutes after that.

Do you realize you called me 11 times in less than 1 hour?  And you never once left a message.  That can only lead me to believe that your 'issue' was a 'non-issue' that could wait.

Thanks for listening.

****Beep ... please leave your message after the tone.

Ginger - I have several people that do this to me all the stinking time.  It makes me crazy!  Is it too much to expect someone to leave a simple message!?  Grrrr

uuggh - i just had that happen yesterday!  while i would love to answer every single call that comes in there are simply times that I can't.  like you - i am not clairvoyant - please leave me a message!  i do have more than one friend, one client, etc - so, yes, it is important for you to leave your name and number!

Carol, when this happens to me, 9 times out of 10 it is advertisers trying to sell me something. They are just waiting for me to pick up. If they don't leave a message, I don't redial the number.

Carol, it is beyond annoying.  I tell my clients, when I am with YOU I won't answer the phone call from someone else either.  SO if I do not answer the phone, the other person is getting that same courtesy.  Not to leave a message means it was not important.

Leesa - At some point my Irish gets going and I just refuse to answer the darned thing.  Especially if it's the upteenth call of the day where the caller has decided not to leave a message.  No message - no return call.  It's simple, really.

Missy - I had a call from an 800 number the other day - or should I say CALLS - 28 of them to be exact - and when I Googled the number it came back to one of those SEO companies.  I sent them a scathing email threatening a harrassment suit if they didn't knock it off.

Gail - I teach my clients the same lesson - from day one.  But still ... some will not believe it applies to them.  Constantly re-enforcing the policy about voice mail seems to be lost on them.  Oh well ... someday ...

Great rant! I hate it when people do that. Do they think you are just sitting in a room somewhere with your phone in your hand waiting for THEM to call?

Hi Carol... you get a BIG AMEN from me on this post!  I always return my calls promptly, but I give all my clients the assurance that when I am with them that they have my full and undivided attention at that time.  Once I finish with someone, I check messages and return calls.  It's that simple and it's fair... unless there is a fire or loss of blood, in which case, call 9-1-1, not your real estate agent (who is a wimp about the sight of blood and passes out easily).  Believe me, I do not "duck" calls from clients or prospective clients.

Carol, this is so true. Even now, I try to return phone calls but if someone calls, calls again, and then calls again I can't say that I can get every call. Also, with the volume of people I have been dealing with lately, and trying to make files work, sometimes you have to "block out" windows as a workup time. Otherwise I get back to no one, no one is happy, and nothing happens. You can't please everyone and this applies to this business.

This is hysterical! I know that you are making a serious point but did you really have to make ice tea come out of my nose! LOL! You mean you don't have one of those ear bugs permanently imbedded in your ear so you can answer the phone on the toilet or in church. Thank goodness you don't! Those are the #1 device ever made for making the user show thier true rudeness, and making some hapless person who mistakenly thought they were being addressed answer only to feel a fool when given the one minute gesture. Yeah you Mr. Ear Bug User, I have a finger gesture for you too...oh wait, wrong finger!

I say if you take the time to make the call, take the time to leave a message...

It's really simple. Just wait for the beep and then start talking. When you're done, hang up! I'll call you back as soon as I'm able to do so.

Susan - at times I think there are those folks that truly think that I am waiting with my phone in hand, finger on the green button.  Drives me crazy.

Steve - Believe it or not, a few years ago I had a client call me in a panic.  She started screaming that the kitchen was on fire.  I told her to call 911 - she said she couldn't.  So I did.  I have to tell myself that she was frozen in panic.  But why the heck call me?  I can't put the darned fire out!

Eric - I'm with ya!  But apparently there are those that think that all we do is sit around and wait for the checks to roll in.  Yeah .... right

Rich - Did you happen to snap a photo of that iced tea shooting from your nose?  Now that would be fodder for another post!  LOL  And, yes, I do own a couple of bluetooth headsets.  But I'm really lax in using them.  And put that darned finger down!  ;)

Craig - I hear ya!  And I couldn't agree more!

Susie - True.  But we have a couple family members that will call relentlessly and when I can finally answer the darned phone and ask what the problem is the answer is always ... Oh nothing.  Just wondering what you're up to.  And this couldn't be put in a stinking voice mail!?  Grrrrrrrrrr

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Hi Carol!  Now THIS is one of my big pet peeves too!  As a matter of fact, my partner lost a client because he 'never' called her back!  Guess what, she NEVER left one single message!  I know this guy--he's like a brother and you can just about guarantee that he'll even answer his phone when he's in the shower!  If he misses your call and you leave a message, chances are, he'll phone you back without having listenend to his voice messages (which drives me nuts too)!  So, I KNOW that she never left a message and I cannot believe that one expects a phone call back when a message was never left.  That just makes me CRZAY!

Chances are, if you left me a message, you could have gone on with your life and I would have gotten to you in plenty of time!  You stressed yourself out AND wasted your cell phone minutes phoning me repeatedly!!

ARRGH!

Debe - I used to carry my phone with me no matter what room I was in.  Then one day I decided that I don't need it in the bathroom, in church, or in the doctor's office.  That was a refreshing revelation for me and I've added a couple more places to the 'areas of respite' that don't get visited by my phone.  And, for the record, I can't remember the last time I scrolled through a couple dozen 'missed' calls just to see what numbers show up.  If the little voice mail icon is displayed I go straight for that.

Once I listen to the messages I employ the practice of triage to determine who gets what first.

I'm still baffled why someone will call their Realtor if their house is on fire, the plumbing is leaking, etc.  For Pete's sake! call 911 or a repairman!

Carol,

Often times I am on the phone so that is why I do not answer the call coming in.  I am sure this happens to you too.  I am curious, do you have caller ID so you can at least see the number that is calling?  Or are these calls coming in on a work phone.  Anyway, I can definetly see why you are frustrated.  I agree with Missy, often those hang-up callers are advertisers trying to sell something, at least for me.

Marlene - Yes - my phone has caller ID, but I'm not going to pull the phone from my ear to check who's calling in.  And I'm not going to check if I'm with someone.  Voice mail is there for a reason.  And if your call is legit then leave a message.  If you just want to discuss the weather, the price of gas or some other innocuous topic ... then leave a message.  Don't call me every 2-3 minutes hoping I'll be able to answer.
