In much of the West, where the housing boom was most robust, the bust is deepest.
The National Association of Realtors said the West saw a 16.7 percent drop in sales of existing homes in March, with median prices falling 2.9 percent to $330,600.

Portland stands as a relatively bright spot in the region.
Metro Portland continues to defy national home-selling trends. According to the Regional Multiple Listing Service, the average home sale price in January was $322,000, showing annualized appreciation of about 8.4 percent.
