We put up a few minor changes this morning: Spam: We're testing a new spam filter for comments called Akismet. It's a bit of a black box affair where we send them the comment (and IP, user agent, etc.) and they tell us if it's spam or not. In testing on our current data this had roughly a 1% error rate (meaning of the spam identified, 1% wasn't actually spam). This is only currently enabled for commenters who are not logged in. First, I'm sure you all noticed the new blog dashboard... I'm sure Matt, Jon or Caleb will be doing a post explaining that later this morning. We scrapped our old search engine and replaced it with something new, which, we hope, will work better. Please let us know if you think it's misbehaving or return poor results. Basics: Just type something in... like "Ben Kakimoto" and it will do a search for all items that contain "Ben" and "Kakimoto". There are a few minor changes this morning... Associates: I tried to clean up the ordering. I'm still working on this but this version allows you to drag/drop people in your associates groups up and down to change their order. I'll be adding something similar to allow you to move people between groups shortly. Let me know if this isn't working for any of you (best way to do that is through the Contact ActiveRain form). It's pretty advanced javascript - so there might be some browser problems.

We FINALLY added a spell checker to the editor. Really sorry about the very, very, very long wait. To use the spell checker just click the ABC check mark box on the right side of the editor tool bar. It will then underline spelling mistakes with red-squiggles... just click on the words to see new options. We also added "email me" links to to blog views and your profiles on Localism, making it easier for people to get in touch with you. We changed the way the contact form works. changes: Change in Blog Entry Post Date

We received a bunch of suggestions about being able to change the blog entry post date. While you still can't change it (because that would lead to people placing their blog post a the top over and over again) we did make a change making Draft mode be more usable. When you first create a blog entry, if you save it in draft mode the system will update it's post date when you make it public. You asked for it, you got it! You can now opt out of being visible online. So lurk away! There's a new setting. When logged in, go to My Home. Click on Settings in the left hand nav and you should see, under General, "Allow others to see when you're online".
Note though, we're not just showing you online for the no reason (well, right now I guess we technically are :). We're working on some features to allow members to interact in real time (hopefully chat - still in R&D), field questions from potential clients, etc. - if you're not … (36 comments)

We went down for a few hours this morning. We're using pretty bleeding edge development tools on this site which is part of the reason we can crank out new features so fast.... well - one of those tools just bit us pretty hard. Apparently the code we're using for the new search stuff we put in last week is, um, not so stable. :) So - we've pulled the new search stuff for now, put back in the old not-so-great search we used to have and will try to figure out why the new search stuff killed our server. Just a couple of small changes. We were getting a lot of negative feedback about our open ended scoring on blogs (which was actually a mistake on my part but we thought we'd let it slide for a few days) ... so it's back to 3 blogs posts a day for automatic scoring (and 5 a day max). You can now add a descriptions to your associate groups... when viewing the group, near the top, there's a "edit description" link. We put up some settings management for your account today. You can find it in your menu when logged in: This allows you to do control getting email alerts (in addition to the messages in your My Home inbox) for I also added a setting that will allow you to turn off anonymous comments on your blog (members will still be able to comment).
