northern virginia: Six Things We Don't Have in Northern Virginia - 10/12/11 01:01 PM
Northern Virginia has a lot to offer.  That's for sure!
Great job market Educated population Access to 3 major airports High per capita income Lots of cultural activities Close to Washington D.C.
Yet, there's some things that we don't have in Northern Virginia.  Yes, despite great cultural diversity and something for almost everyone, young, old and in between, there are some things that just aren't offered in our region.
I've thought of at least six.  Feel free to comment or e-mail me with others.
Here you go:
1.  Northern Virginia does not have rodeos.  I know you're sorely disappointed about … (6 comments)

Want some great news?  Who doesn't?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released an unemployment report today that examined the rates of unemployment in the Northern Virginia counties and cities.
Unless you've been living under a rock, haven't turned on the t.v., read a newspaper, been on the internet, or walked down the street in the last 6 months, you're aware that the unemployment rate in the United States has skyrocketed to the 10% region.
Well, in Northern Virginia, most areas are doing quite well when it comes to employment statistics, and some counties, like Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun are doing … (7 comments)

northern virginia: Northern Virginia - A Safe Place to Live - 01/28/09 12:19 AM
Whether you are a young single woman, a family with children, or even a supposedly tough guy, chances are a major consideration when deciding on a community in which to live is the following question:

IS IT SAFE?

I believe that every single client that I've helped purchase a home told me that one of their criteria was to have a home in a safe neighborhood.

Good news for Northern Virginia homebuyers (and current residents):  According to a just-released study from the University of Virginia,
NORTHERN VIRGINIA IS A SAFE PLACE TO LIVE!

northern virginia: Nature's Fireworks - 06/07/08 02:21 PM
This evening in Northern Virginia after a day of sweltering temperatures that actually reached 100 degrees, we're watching an amazing thunder and lightning display move its way through Alexandria.
Since I live on the 16th floor of a high-rise condominium building (Alexandria Knolls West -- where I currently have this wonderful listing for sale on the 8th floor), I've got a panoramic view of nature's fireworks.
Here's a clip of some video that I shot this evening from my balcony:

We certainly hope we don't have a replay of last August when lightning struck our condo building.

To whom are you marketing?  Do you target a specialized niche?  Maybe you've just obtained your SRES designation and focus on seniors.  Perhaps your previous career was in technology so your sphere of influence knows all about megabytes and Oracle databases.

Or maybe you've decided to work primarily with first-time homebuyers.

In any case, whether you cast your net wide or narrow, it is important to know who your buyers are.

northern virginia: Walk to Fight Breast Cancer in Alexandria - 10/11/07 12:05 PM
The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Did you know that today the five year survival rate for women with localized breast cancer is 97%?  Back in the 1940s, only 72% of women diagnosed with breast cancer survived for five years.

In the U.S. the lifetime risk of a woman developing breast cancer is one in eight.

Breast Cancer awareness and support for breast cancer research and treatment is a cause that is near and dear to me.  My mother is a breast cancer survivor for almost 20 years now, is doing well and is very healthy.  She is also very … (4 comments)

northern virginia: Mighty Paragaph 7 of the Sales Contract - 10/03/07 03:09 PM
Virginia is a caveat emptor state.

That's Latin for "buyer beware."  For one reason or another, lawyers, Realtors, and the Catholic Church manage to keep the almost dead language on permanent life support.

Thus, when purchasing a home in Northern Virginia, it is very important to understand that there are certain disclosures and disclaimers that are made by the seller.  It is crucial to be aware of certain protections that are offered by the Regional Sales Contract.
The mightiest of these protections is Paragraph 7 of the Regional Sales Contract.  Paragraph 7 is so important that I read it verbatim at our initial … (28 comments)

Throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall, Northern Virginia and D.C. residents enjoy the outdoors.  One such way is by taking to the roads, or better yet the paths... the bike paths.  Bicycling paths and multi-use trails abound throughout the Greater Washington area.  Bicycling is a great way to get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air, maybe meet some new people, learn about new areas of town, and even commute to work in an environmentally safe way while avoiding traffic.
Seven years ago when I was working for a law firm in D.C., I used to bicycle in to the office almost every … (0 comments)

northern virginia: Buying a Home in Northern Virginia & D.C.: Step by Step Flowchart - 08/13/07 12:35 AM
To the uninitiated, the homebuying process can seem daunting.  For first time homebuyers, it can be like learning a whole new language: what's PITI? (principal, interest, taxes, and insurance)  How about an ARM? (adjustable rate mortgage), what does DOM mean? (days on market).  People living in the Washington D.C. area with the abundance of government employees and military may be used to acronyms and abbreviations, but real estate truly has many of its own.
Even those who have bought and sold homes before may not remember all of the steps in the sometimes lengthy process.
To make things easier, I have created a … (5 comments)
