I think the upcoming primary election in his home state of Pennsylvania caused Senator Santorum to reconsider his position and, perhaps, led him to walk away from the table with his winnings intact. 
Two term Senator Santorum lost his last bid for re-election in 2006 by a significant 17%, a loss that could end the career of most politicians.  But by his performance in the Presidential Primaries, Rick has rehabilitated himself and has become a spokesman for his causes once again.
