A few hours later, after his friends departed, Roberts exchanged some heated words with bar owner William Brooks. As Roberts turned to leave, Brooks came up behind him and gave the hapless man a good whack … (0 comments)

cripple creek: Ice! Cripple Creek Ice Festival Continues! - 02/15/10 01:34 AM
Presidents Day Febuary 15, 2010;
Cripple Creek Ice continues to Fly and Chain Saws Roar up and down the Streets of Bennett Avenue in Cripple Creek as the Ice Carvers continue to coax hunks of frozen water into fanciful works of art!
Wandering through the maze of ice on Friday, this is what the very preliminary sculptures look like prior to yeilding their inner secrets known only to the carver!

cripple creek: Spring Cleaning at the Ranch - 04/13/09 01:57 AM
Yesterday was a typical Easter for us in the High Country.  I woke early to let the dogs out, start the coffee and brush the demanding cat.  She won't shut up til I give in give her a good brushing.  It was, as usual, still dark outside.  I stoked the fire, glad to see the 20 yr old daughter that refuses to work had loaded wood into the fire before retiring, which is usually sometime right before I get up.  Then I sat down on the computer to pull up my e-mail and check my daily horoscope.  Typical daily routine for … (7 comments)

cripple creek: Springtime Feeding - 03/31/09 03:31 AM

Its a brisk morning here in the Central Rockies near Guffey, Colorado.  Sun's shining, breeze is breezin, birds are birdin.  Ducks on the pond, a sure sign that Spring is here and always a welcome sight!  So, as I type these words and gaze out over the landscape beyond the ruination we call a garden towards the pasture, I am today also contemplating pulling a bale out for the horses.
Let me explain.  I am running 5 head out here, on 105 acres.  BLM standard grazing recomendations for this "neck of the woods" call for 1 Animal Management Unit for every 15 … (3 comments)

cripple creek: Springtime in the Rockies! - 03/29/09 03:17 AM
Sprintime in the Rockies!  A wonderful time of year!  Beautiful crisp clear days interspersed with howling blizzards!  Ain't it great!  We just had our first really serious blizzard here in the Central Mountain Area, all that snow you see on the news got stuck on them ski slopes and rarely made it here....until now.
This was really just a baby blizzard, really!
When the news gabbed about it endlessly for days and predicted 1-2 ft of snow, folks in town got all excited!  We always do in a blizzard!  It could mean a couple of things to us....it could be a … (2 comments)

cripple creek: Goodbye to an Awesome Actor! - 04/06/08 02:54 AM
I got the news this morning. Charlton Heston died.  What a way to wake up to the day!  It made me sad as the news report briefly outlined his career and highlighted his most famous roles as Moses in "The 10 Commandments" and "Ben Hur".  Fox News has a great obit on their news page http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,346965,00.html
"I have a face that belongs in another century," he often remarked. I concur.  His craggy good looks and lean, muscular body fit well in some of my favorite roles, as the astronaut in "Planet of the Apes" and several westerns of forgettable fame.  Who could … (1 comments)

cripple creek: Find a Better Deal! - 03/18/08 01:12 AM
Yes, she's a bit of a plain jane!  All this home needs is someone to come in, decorate and make it their own!  Nestled High in the Rocky Mountains with water piped in from the base of Pikes Peak, this home sits on 1.08 acres thick with Aspen and an unlimited view of meadows, streams and wildlife!  The view is protected by greenbelt, so that means no one will build in front of you and wreck this view!  Wonderful!
Built in 1991, 960 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 2 car attached garage, radiant heat, seriously insulated top and bottom, 2 … (0 comments)

cripple creek: Cripple Creek Ice Festival! - 02/14/08 05:16 PM

Ok! Here we go!  The Cripple Creek Ice Festival kicked off last weekend!  This was a great Ice Carving Demonstration and Display by some of the nations top ice carvers.  None of whose name I can remember!  I spent way too much time at the Ice Bar, but I did actually get a chance to take some photos.  They were still working on the carvings when I got there.  People were wandering through the streets, visiting, kids playing and families walking dogs, kids, grandmas etc.  The photo on the top right is the Centerpiece of the festival; a 15 ft hi … (4 comments)

cripple creek: Cripple Creek Ice! - 01/12/08 02:04 AM
This winter the streets of Cripple Creek will come alive with, what else, but ICE!  Tons of ice will take center stage as professional carvers ply their ice into magnificent sculpture with the tools of the trade! The Buzz of Chainsaws carving through the ancient medium will echo throughout the mountains as carvers race to beat the heat and create their masterpieces!  Ice delivery begins Feb 5 or 6, carving starts immediately, creations will be on display through Valentines Weekend!  Will the ice hold? Will the 25ft long Stagecoach carving stay in place or will we be riding it down Bennett Ave?  … (2 comments)

cripple creek: Cripple Creek, Not your Standard Colorado Vacation Resort - 01/02/08 01:30 AM
Welcome to Cripple Creek, Colorado! Like the Headline indicates, Cripple Creek is NOT your usual Vacation Resort town.  Cripple Creek is unique in so many ways it will be interesting to see if I can summarize them all in a brief blog!  First of all, Cripple Creek is a small town 'way up in the Rocky Mountains, altitude 9494.  We don't have any ski runs culminating downtown.  We don't have big, fancy restaurants or pricy retail shops.  What we do have are fantastic museums, inexpensive residences and affordable vacant land and plenty of that small town homeyness that is missing in … (2 comments)
