Keeping your home cool during the hot summer months can be an expensive prospect. This is especially true if you have large windows or rooms that have multiple windows that let sunlight in. While it’s great to have natural light during the day, it can work against your AC by heating up the air in those rooms at the same time you’re pumping cool air throughout the house. Use two doormats at every house entry point - one inside and one outside. Take off your shoes when you enter the house. Vacuum carpets weekly using a vacuum with a small-particle filter. Damp-mop floors once a week. Wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth once a week. Hang machine-washable curtains instead of heavy draperies. Thanks to smart windows, curtains are optional. Smart windows are made with a special high-tech glass that can quickly change from clear to tinted or that can selectively block heat, light or glare. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which has been heavily involved in smart-window technology, estimates that windows currently cost Americans $40 billion a year in energy use. Although residential smart glass is expected to cost about twice as much as conventional glass, it cuts heating and cooling costs, so you can theoretically recoup the added expense.
