outdoor activities: It's a Tough Job - But Someone's Gotta Do It! - 06/12/10 08:51 AM
I'm a big supporter of recycling and reducing waste, and it seems to me that garage sales represent a wonderful opportunity to support those goals by recycling!  You know they say that the very best way to reduce waste is to reuse things - so today I was doing my part by hitting some garage sales in the Olympia/Lacey area!

My other motivation was to find some games, puzzles, childrens' books and toys for us to keep our office well stocked for when my own granddaughter or the kids of clients come in.

I found quite an assortment of … (3 comments)

outdoor activities: Olympia's Public Pool is....Not Exactly a Pool! - 06/07/10 07:45 AM

Sunshine in Olympia this past Saturday had our family downtown playing along with many others.  Now Olympia does not actually have a public outdoor pool when sunshine calls you to go get in the water.  But this interactive fountain sure serves the purpose well!  Kids (OK - all ages!) enjoy playing in the fountain or watching the fun from the grass surrounding it.  The water spouts up unexpectedly, making sure everyone is giggly and wet before long.

And then you can stroll along by Capitol Lake across the street, or start up a game of frisbee in the … (0 comments)

outdoor activities: Olympia's Wooden Boat Fair - a Perfect Mother's Day Outing! - 05/10/10 08:39 AM
Yesterday was a gorgeous day in Olympia - and spending it downtown at the annual Wooden Boat Fair was a terrific way to spend Mother's Day!!

So many cool boats were lined up at the Percival landing boardwalk area, including many that encouraged people to come aboard and check out the detail.

Some of the boats had history galore, from the Sand Man which is now in its 100th year, or another boat whose info sheet showed that it was used as a patrol boat in World War 2.

The food booths were bustling with people getting everything … (3 comments)

outdoor activities: You Saw Elephants, Alligators & Bees in the Street? No You Aren't Crazy! - 04/25/10 10:19 AM
If you saw LOTS of strange creatures in the streets of Olympia yesterday, you weren't dreaming or hallucinating!  It was our annual Procession of the Species - a chance for the creative spirit to flourish in Olympia as people pay tribute to our natural world and the elements and creatures within it.

The crowd starts to gather well before the start time of the procession, but there is plenty of chalk to keep everyone well entertained drawing in the streets.  And even many of the spectators are dressed up for the occasion so there is crowd watching at its best.

outdoor activities: Baby Animal Time at Olympia's Lattin Farms - 04/16/10 10:23 AM
What a fun visit we had yesterday to Lattin's Farm in Olympia!!  Springtime is baby animal time and the farm had lots of babies to admire and photograph!
I think that my little granddaughter liked the baby goats best - and I have to admit they were super cute!  The littlest ones were fast asleep together under a tree.

The slightly bigger ones were busy chasing each other and playing, and then detouring over to mom for a quick snack!

The floppy ears on these little goats were part of their charm.

There were also baby bunnies, … (12 comments)

outdoor activities: Sand in the City was a Blast!! - 08/23/09 09:55 AM
I got to enjoy this year's Sand in the City in Olympia with my son and my little 2 year old granddaughter - & what fun it was!  The sand sculptures are just amazing - so much detail and very witty besides!

Everything from scenes out of Madagascar and Ice Age to tugboat eating crabs!

Watching the master sculptors at work was fascinating, too, as they meticulously added detail to their work.

And besides lots of music to enjoy, the Hands on Children's Museum had plenty of craft tables to entice children to make a mosaic necklace or … (4 comments)

outdoor activities: Lacey Rotary 20th Duck Dash - 06/08/09 07:14 AM
This past Saturday we went to the Lacey Rotary Duck Dash in Tumwater Falls Park & it was a blast!  I'm not sure how we managed to have not gone before this year since this is the 20th year it has been held, but I'm glad we got there finally this time.  Our almost 2 year old granddaughter thought it was a great idea right from the time we parked and rode on the shuttle bus to the event (actually she has been wanting to ride the bus again ever since!).

The park had games, a giant slide, face painting, … (3 comments)

outdoor activities: Olympia Area Favorites - Burfoot Park - 05/26/09 11:51 AM
Burfoot Park is a county park in Olympia that is a wonderful place for family fun, with a big grassy area to picnic or play in the grass, playground equipment for the kids, and then you can go exploring down the wooded trails that lead to the saltwater beach.

We were lucky enough to go check it out recently while there was an extremely low tide and so there was LOTS of beach to walk and amazing sea creatures to encounter!

Very educational encounters with crabs, seaweed, pretty shells, & the gorgeous backdrop of gentle waves rolling in and sailboats … (1 comments)
