discover maryland: One for the Summer Bucket List: Assateague's Wild Ponies - 03/21/16 10:13 AM
Now that Spring has officially sprung it's time to make plans for the Summer! Here's one for your bucket list: the wild ponies of Assateague Island.
Assateague Island is a magical place, there are no hotels, the beach is beautiful, the surf great and once low tide occurs, the best seashells appear. The stars of Assateague Island are, no doubt, the wild ponies.
It's become a favorite get away for my kids and I and we visit every year. We've seen a couple ponies gallop along the beach, we've seen them in the distance and last year we got really lucky when … (6 comments)

discover maryland: A quick trip to my favorite Maryland Beach - 08/09/15 03:45 AM
One of the reasons why I love living in Maryland is that I can hop in my car, cross the Bay Bridge and make it to Assateague Island - my favorite Maryland Beach - in about 3.5 hours. Timing is important, however, or else a quick trip can turn into an all-day treck at snail's pace (one of my least favorite things about living in Maryland).
But no matter if you make it there in record time or not, a day on Assateague Island will surely melt all the stresses away. The ocean, the sand, the waves, the wild horses, the seashells … (9 comments)

There is a lot Annapolis, MD is known for - the State Capitol, home of the Naval Academy, America's Sailing Capital, the Bay Bridge, blue crabs ... but chicks?
Discover Maryland: the chicks of Annapolis

The chicks of Annapolis can be found on West St in the Central Arts District. The inspiration came from the CowParade in Chicago, a public art display of fiberglass cows, and the 2012 law that allowed Annapolis residents to keep up to 5 hens in their back-yards.

discover maryland: Discover Maryland: Historic Oakley Cabin - 09/27/12 12:17 PM

Oakley Cabin sits alongside Brookeville Rd, just a short drive (or walk) from historic Brookeville, MD. The log cabin was part of the Oakley Farm and its land was originally owned by Colonel Richard Brooke, also known as "the Fighting Quaker". Oakley Farm's 'big house' dated back to the 1760s - sadly it was destroyed by a fire in the 1970s.
Oakley Cabin, built around 1820, is one of originally three such structures and is representative of slave or tenant housing. According to Montgomery County Parks, Oakley Farms was operated by Richard B. Dorsey - a slave owner and later sold … (12 comments)

discover maryland: The Robinson Nature Center in Columbia, MD - 07/24/12 02:41 PM
The Robinson Nature Center in Columbia, a hands-on learning experience for kids - and mom & dad, too!
The Robinson Nature Center in Columbia is a nature wonderland for kids - hands on exploring is strongly encouraged. The exhibits are beautifully done and keep little ones interested through lots of color, buttons, wheels, sounds and lights. The upper level focuses on the seasons and the lower on wildlife during the day and night. The building itself was built with green technologies in mind and emphasizes sustainable design features: a green roof, solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, low VOC paints, recycled … (4 comments)
