When Mayors Scott Govitz and Tom Winarski and Judge Gary Allen sat down beginning in 1997 to discuss creating an endowment fund to benefit Gladwin County, none of them probably guessed that the fund which started as part of the Midland Area Community Foundation (MACF) in October of 1997 with $20,000 and now, as of Dec. 31, 2012, the balance is $803,619. When the Gladwin County Endowment Fund started, there was no money to be handed out,but the Midland Area Community Foundation took Gladwin County on as an equal partner, making grants available from their unrestricted fund to local organizations. With over $800,000 now in the fund, that means that there is currently $22,827.94 worth of spendable cash that will be made available through grants in 2013. Over $60,715 in grant awards has been distributed to Gladwin County projects from the fund since its inception to 19 different organizations.
