5 year diary has been replaced by facebook? Absolutely.

What a lovely picture. 
This is a 1937 five-year diary that was started by my now-deceased mother-in-law.  She added things to it everyday.  She probably also kept it hidden so that little brothers or nosy sisters couldn't find it and read the private notations. The picture is taken on an aged oak desk top that is perhaps older than the diary.
Guess what?
I have been watching facebook and participating somewhat with pictures and opinions from time to time.  But I don't pour my heart out like I have observed others doing.  Folks will sometimes rant and rave about things that probably should just be in a private diary.  I feel like a little sis that stumbled upon a hidden diary!  So my observation is that facebook has taken over the private diary.
You may go back in a day or two and the rant will have been deleted but another guess what?  The rant is saved by using the little print screen tab and can be kept forever.
 
Did I ever keep a diary?  Yes, but I decided that I wouldn't want anyone in the future to read it so I destroyed it.  Too bad 'cause I'd sorta like to reread it!
