Fall Colors in the Northwest Territories

 
This photo of the Richardson Mountains was taken several years ago during a September trip on the Dempster Highway, the road that takes you as far north as you can drive in North America. The Dempster runs from Dawson City in the Yukon to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. It is a 457 mile long gravel road through gorgeous remote wilderness, with basically nothing on it except a gas station/motel/restaurant about halfway up at Eagle Plains, right at the Arctic Circle. By next year, it will extend another 121 miles to Tuktoyaktuk, on the Beaufort Sea.
 
The  landscape is arctic tundra, and is well north of the tree line. The red color in the foliage is primarily Fireweed.
