The National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators and the Consumer Federation of America say dissatisfaction with home improvement work is the number one consumer complaint.
 
Consumer advocates recommend that you check out a contractor’s licenses, call the references given, and check with the local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed.
 
Here are some other contractor tricks to watch out for:
 
1.. Comes to your home, uninvited, offering to make repairs
 
2.. The contractor says they are working in the area and has extra materials left over from another job.
 
3.. Your told you must make repairs immediately to avoid damage and tries to pressure you to sign a contract immediately
 
4.. Offers to use your home as a “display home”
 
Google is also a great resource for reviews. I also search Face Book for companies. Your NextDoor App is a wonderful tool for communicating with neighbors about unwanted visitors.
 
Call the police station if you feel uncomfortable when approached by these unwanted visitors.
