Hell on Wheels:  New York City's Subway in the 1970's
A fond childhood memory of mine is riding the NY subway system in the '70's.  My indefatigable and uncomplaining grandmother would schlep my brother and me from the 79th St. station in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn into Manhattan to the American Museum of Natural History so that we could see the dinosaur fossils, and then maybe later we'd stop at a Chock Full o' Nuts for something to eat.
