falls church: Living near the highway in major city? - 07/29/09 11:32 PM

In an area crisscrossed with high volume commuter routes and heavily-trafficked Interstates, it's inevitable that some folks are going to live in close proximity to a highway. It's great to be near the Beltway or Route 66 because this can take a serious bite out of your commute. But the downside is that the highways can generate a lot of noise. In most areas, there are towering concrete walls to dampen sound in the neighborhoods in close proximity to the Beltway, I-66, I-395 and other highways.

In the picture above the wall has been taken down as work … (0 comments)

falls church: Short-changed by short-sales - 05/31/09 11:38 PM
What is a Short Sale? A short-sale occurs when the individual selling the property is selling the property for less than what they owe for the property. This means that after the seller agrees to the price, the lender must also agree to the price. Despite what anyone might try to tell you, that's the only difference between a short-sale and a normal sale.
Unfortunately, there are many selling agents who work with the notion that there is a different set of rules for short-sales. These misguided agents are souring the market for everyone. (More below.)
In Northern Virginia, below a … (1 comments)

falls church: Finding a home in Northern Virginia: is all about jurisdiction. - 05/09/09 11:43 PM
For many, especially those who are new to the area, the system of jurisdictions that we have in the Commonwealth of Virginia can be confusing. This is especially confusing in Northern Virginia, where Virginia intersects with Washington DC and the State of Maryland.
Fortunately I have a fresh bottle of CONFUSION-B-GON to spray liberally as needed.
Around our nation's capital Let me start with my single-biggest pet peeve among newcomers: the term "DC proper".
I have seen this term used regularly on a site that claims to provide local information. That information is provided by people using anonymous handles. Anonymous handles … (2 comments)

falls church: About Condos - 08/07/08 11:16 PM
The best part about owning a condo is that your condominium sets you on the path to financial freedom. The worst part about buying your first condo is that buying a condo usually costs more monthly cash flow than renting an apartment.
While it often costs more per month to buy than to rent, in most cases, all that extra money comes back to you at the end of the year in the form of tax refunds. Best of all, next year your mortgage will be the same amount and your debt will be reduced. With an apartment your money is … (0 comments)

falls church: Northern Virginia's Transportation Network - 08/03/08 01:30 AM
Northern Virginia's traffic is shaped by its proximity to Washington DC and proximity to several important job centers. The world famous Capitol Beltway (Interstate 495) circles DC like a wheel around a hub. The Beltway links Northern Virginia's suburban communities such as Springfield, Kingstowne, Braddock Road and Vienna to the transportation network. The Beltway generally moves at or above the speed limit most times and most days.
In Virginia, the Beltway travels from the American Legion Bridge upriver to the newly-rebuilt Woodrow Wilson Bridge downriver. At each bridge the Beltway enters Maryland. In Maryland the Beltway loops around DC creating a complete … (2 comments)

falls church: DC's Quadrant system - 08/02/08 01:24 AM
Washington DC is organized in a quadrant system labeled as North East, North West, South East and South West. This is most usually abbreviated NE, NW, SE, & SW. If you are given an address in DC, it generally can be located in one of four places. For example, 1500 A St. could be 1500 H St. NE, SE, SW, or NW. Those four addresses aren't anywhere near each other.
The center of the quadrant system is the US Capitol Building. Because the Capitol is near the center of the original planners vision of the city and because the Civil War … (2 comments)
