i395: Purchasing a home near the highway?

In an area crisscrossed with high volume commuter routes and heavily-trafficked Interstates, it’s inevitable that some folks are going to live in close proximity to a highway. It’s great to be near the Beltway or Route 66 because this can take a serious bite out of your commute. But the downside is that the highways can generate a lot of noise. In most areas, there are towering concrete walls to dampen sound in the neighborhoods in close proximity to the Beltway, I-66, I-395 and other highways.

In 1949, Shirley Highway had just been completed. This video shows a side by side comparison of I-395 today and Shirley Highway back in 1949. The video begins not far from the present-day location of the Isabella at Monticello Mews. It’s interesting to see the changes at Edsall Road, Landmark Mall and Seminary Road.

The area called “Skyline” is in Fairfax County VA inside the Beltway near I-395. Condos here have a Falls Church address but they are not located in the city of Falls Church. The area is well-served by public transportation and there are many interesting restaurants in the surrounding area. Interstate 395 doesn’t have Metro train service but it carries a massive load of traffic none-the-less. In addition to its 8 to 10 lanes of traffic, 395 has an extra 3 lanes of HOV that switch direction depending on the hour of the day. 395 leaves DC between the Pentagon and Crystal City (both in Arlington) and on the way out to I-95 and the Beltway at Springfield, I 395 passes Shirlington, Landmark, East Falls Church and other neighborhoods.
