grand rapids: Zucchini Bread - a peace offering (read: Bribe) to make up for the fact that I've been gone so long. - 09/15/09 01:51 AM
It's been a long time since I've written anything here.  So I'm going to ease in slowly and try to build up a head of steam again.   The 16-months have been months of tremendous change in my life but I'm back and hope to a regular read for you once again, if you'll have me.
So today, I thought I'd share the recipe that has been in big demand when I take a loaf of zucchini bread anywhere.  Because I planted several zucchini plants in my garden, and it's been a great growing season in Grand Rapids, I've had an … (0 comments)

grand rapids: It's Winter in Grand Rapids, But there's a wonderful Bloom that you have to enjoy! - 02/04/09 11:37 PM
A week or so ago, I was having coffee with a friend on Saturday morning when she mentioned that she'd had the most amazing dinner the night before at Bloom in downtown Grand Rapids.   She pulled the restaurant's website up and handed me the computer.  I was immediately intrigued and impressed.  It was a very creative menu that offered combinations that triggered my appetite.
Finally last evening that same friend and I met for dinner.  It was as delightful as I'd hoped it would be.  I was greeted warmly and seated immediately.  Gwen, our server, and I had a chance to … (2 comments)

grand rapids: Floating away my stress in Grand Rapids, MI - 02/04/09 06:41 AM

Floating Away My Stress at "Just Relax Floatation
Grand Rapids, MI
When my February Grand Rapids Magazine arrived there was an article entitled "Floating Free" which caught my eye.  It was about a business a few minutes away from my house that has Floatation tanks (a.k.a. Isolation tanks or Sensory deprivation tanks).  I'd heard of these tanks and seen them in the movies, but did not know of any in my area, so I was intrigued.  The article said that these 8' long, 4' wide tanks have 12" deep water that contains 800-1000 pounds of Epson salt and is maintained at … (4 comments)

grand rapids: Old Dogs- New Tricks or my first Skype Video Chat with out of state buyers. - 01/14/09 11:30 PM
In the grand scheme of things, I don't exactly consider myself an 'old dog', but I realize that I could be deluding myself a bit as I look in the mirror.
Last evening though, I proved to myself that I can still adapt to new (er) technology to communicate with the next generation of clients.  I'm pretty geeked!  And, I'm Eric Webster, and I aspire to BE a geek! (crowd in the background says "HI Eric!)
A nice young couple who now live in NYC contacted me at the advice of one of my past clients.  They're preparing to move to West … (9 comments)

grand rapids: Grand Rapids MI- in the Best Life Magazine's- Top 100 Places to Raise a Family!~~! - 05/20/08 01:30 AM
I'm pretty excited today, there's good news in Grand Rapids, MI.  According to the Today show,  Best Life Magazine has issued their Top 100 best places to raise a family and Grand Rapids is #35!  The only Michigan city ranked higher is Ann Arbor at #30.

Best Life is confirming what we knew in 1989 when we selected Grand Rapids as our new home town.  At the time, I was in the restaurant business in Bay City (a place where at least at that time, quantity was more important than quality).  We were in GR for a food show and as … (4 comments)

grand rapids: Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park announces the Summer Concert Lineup for 2008 - 04/07/08 08:18 AM
Do you enjoy an intimate, outdoor venue for concerts?  Prefer a beautiful garden setting to an amphitheatre where you're so far away that the artist looks like an ant, and the jumbo-tron doesn't do it justice?
Oh have a got a venue for you!  Fredrik Meijer Gardens 6th Season was announced over the weekend, and it's a great line-up to be presented at a wonderful facility.

grand rapids: Butterflies are Blooming at Meijer Gardens, one of the treasures of Grand Rapids - 03/22/08 01:54 AM
Three video clips of a fun afternoon that Karen and I had on Friday. The Butterflies are one of the many annual events that make Meijer Gardens such a wonderful place. There are concerts in the summer, sculpture throughout the gardens, beautiful landscaping of every description, and great gift shop, a wide variety of classes, special exhibits (like The Thinker spent the summer looking out at an amazing pond and waterfall while the Detroit Institute of Arts was refurbishing his normal home). If you've not been, it's worth the trip from wherever you are! … (5 comments)

grand rapids: (Realtor) Stories, We don't need no stinkin' stories..... - 03/19/08 03:36 AM
Karen and I got a call last week from home owner who found our website and wanted to talk to us about selling their home.  It's in a nice area, had been on the market 3-years ago and they're ready to move to a warmer climate.  I'm thinking: "Cool, a motivated seller who's been in their house for a couple of decades, this is a good thing".
We met with them.  Talked about our marketing, talked about the market, talked about the mortgage balance they have....oops "Danger Will Robinson" "Those numbers do not compute".... my initial thoughts on price put it in … (13 comments)

grand rapids: A Bucket List- What a GREAT IDEA!! - 12/27/07 01:29 PM
I just saw a preview for a new movie coming out.  Generally I don't pay a lot of attention to movie trailers, as I'm a confirmed NETFLIX guy. (That way people kicking the back of my seat and talking on their cell phones don't become a source of frustration for me)
But this one talked about a concept that caused my ears to stand up.  A BUCKET LIST.  The list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket.  What a great idea!  I'm thinking that I have to have one.
I've had a 'Life List' of performances/performers I really … (16 comments)

grand rapids: Not SOOOO BAD! In fact... LOOKING GOOOOOD! - 12/18/07 02:08 PM
I was doing some end of the year type organizing, preparing a mailing that I always send after Christmas to every client I had a closing with in that calendar year.  Thanking them again for entrusting their buying/selling process to me, wishing them well and giving them another copy of their HUD-1 closing statement in case they misplaced theirs in the move, and as a reminder that their closing could have some tax implications.  It's also a way of showing them that I've got their back, even after the closing is a distant memory.
I started looking at the files, cross checking … (6 comments)

grand rapids: Merry Tuba Christmas! What great Holiday Fun in Grand Rapids and around the world. - 12/16/07 09:09 AM

Tuba Chrismas began in 1974 as a tribute to the late William J. Bell who as born on Christmas day 1902.  The first performace was at New York's Rockerfeller Plaza Ice Rink.  The music was traditional Christmas music that had been arranged for Tuba and Euphonium.
Our son, Jared has told us the fun he's had for years participating in the Merry Tuba Christmas concerts in various places he's lived and worked.  This year we saw the notice that the 3rd Annual Tuba Christmas Concert was taking place December 16 at St. Cecilia's Royce Auditorium, so after church we went out for … (5 comments)

grand rapids: Great Dining in Grand Rapids, one man's opinion- Part 1 - 12/10/07 09:58 AM
Grand Rapids has an amazing (and growing) variety of restaurants.  From places that have the best bar burger imaginable, to the AAA Five Diamond Award winning Cygnus at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and everything in between.
Because I've watch the transformation of dining options grow from a very basic meat and potatoes town (in the ‘80's) to a very diverse group of outstanding restaurants today, and because in my life before real estate, I spent 20-years in the restaurant business, I thought over the days and weeks to come, I'd post my observations of some of my favorites.

grand rapids: Do you have a pint you can spare? There's someone who's very life could depend on it! - 11/27/07 11:04 AM
They Vant (and need) your BLOOD!!!
There was an opinion column by Editor Mike Lloyd of the Grand Rapids Press on Sunday that caught my eye.  It was about the competition for donor's blood in the Grand Rapids area.
Our Michigan Community Blood Center (MCBC) has provided blood products to the many hospitals in the Grand Rapids area for many years.  In fact they have a contract to be the sole supplier of blood to Spectrum, St. Mary's and MetroHealth Hospitals.
For 20-years, there was an agreement between Red Cross and MCBC that Red Cross would not conduct blood drives … (5 comments)
