southern california: The California Surf Museum in Oceanside, California - 03/26/09 12:04 PM
When one thinks of Southern California one likely thinks of beaches and, of course, surfing.
Surfing in Southern California has played a significant role in the development of the sport, and of the growth in many coastal towns.
It is, indeed, for many a lifestyle, with a culture and even a language all its own. Consider how surfing spawned movies (remember Gidget?) and songs (hey, where would be Beach Boys be without surfing?).
It is likely a rare beach along the coast that does not appeal to surfers for different reasons, and some areas have become downright famous...such as Swami's Beach … (11 comments)

southern california: Cardiff-By-The-Sea Surf Company in Cardiff, California - 11/28/08 01:12 PM

As many of you likely know, whether you read this blog regularly or not, the Southern California area is known for terrific surfing. Though I am a non-surfer, I know enough to recognize areas like Cardiff, Swami's Beach in Encinitas, and other areas as being top-areas for surfing.

Cardiff (more formally known as Cardiff-by-the-Sea), to me, exudes a sense of beachiness (is that a word?). The beaches are close by (walking distance from many homes) surfers are lined up along the coast road, and the overall feel is of a small seaside town that is struggling to retain … (11 comments)

southern california: THE BIG ONE Happens TOMORROW, 11/13 at 10 AM - 11/12/08 03:06 PM
ALERT     ALERT     ALERT
Geez it sounds like I am announcing the apocalypse.
There has been talk of THE BIG ONE for years, and folks are getting serious about it here in California. And with good reason.
Tomorrow, at 10 AM about 5 million Southern Californians (and anyone else who wants to take part) will practice for The Big One.
The Great ShakeOut, as it is being called, is a real life practice for the big earthquake that has been predicted for Southern California for years. This will be the LARGEST disaster simulation in the country. What makes it different, and … (10 comments)

southern california: The Ortega Highway and Lake Elsinore, California - 10/06/08 06:53 PM
I recently taught a blogging class in Orange County and then needed to make a trip through the mountains to Temecula for a meeting. I decided the take the Ortega Highway from San Juan Capistrano, a distance of about 30 miles. For folks who have not traveled through this area, you are in for a visual treat.
The Ortega Highway has an interesting history worth reading about, either before or after taking a journey through the Santa Ana Mountains (through the Cleveland National Forest) in either direction from Lake Elsinore (both a lake and a town) to the sea in San … (11 comments)

southern california: Fall is in the Air in Carlsbad, California - 10/04/08 06:07 PM
Fall is in the air in Carlsbad, California. Some folks who don't live here think we don't have seasons, and that it is sunny and warm all the time. Well, it is that way much of the time, but we certainly do have seasons, although they are less dramatic than many parts of the country. If you do not enjoy cold winters and hot, humid summers, Carlsbad offers the perfect alternative.

And you can escape to the desert for heat, or head to the mountains for snow just a short distance away. You can even see the snow on the … (7 comments)

southern california: Feeling Like a Kid Again at Disneyland - 11/10/07 01:28 PM
I spent the last day before my birthday (I'm NOT telling which one, except it was another Jack Benny birthday) at Disneyland in Anaheim, near Los Angeles.
It was a deja vu experience, having been there with our two daughters about 20 years ago (and returning with the older one and her boyfriend). The really cool thing is that we had FREE tickets plus got to eat at Club 33 (the private dining room with there is a waiting list for membership of almost 14 years - many members are corporations, and they often give out tickets to deserving employees).
Disneyland … (36 comments)

southern california: San Diego Fires - Oct. 22 to Oct. 26, 2007 - 10/22/07 11:33 AM

There are various updates over the last couple of days in the comments themselves, rather than here in the post itself.

OCTOBER 22:
I have been pondering what to write. It was an easy decision to focus on much more important things, the significant fires burning here in San Diego. All else pales in comparison.
What many have feared for months is occurring - the Santa Ana winds have blown … (194 comments)

WARNING - this is a long slideshow, about 100 photos, but it represents much of what I enjoy about Southern California and some snippets into daily life.  Sometimes photos say it better . Enjoy! (no points here!)

southern california: An East Coast Boy Muses on Life in California - 08/07/07 03:10 PM
I often find myself thinking about life here in the Carlsbad area as compared to my former life in Cambridge (across the Charles River from Boston) where I lived for about 20 years (well, all total in the New England area).  I've been here 27 months so things are much more familiar, but there are still times when I reflect on how different it is.
This post is some of my musings on life here compared to back East (here's my East coast photo). I grew up in the East and lived most of my life there, except for about 7 years … (65 comments)

southern california: Down to the Beach in Leucadia - 04/19/07 11:12 AM
Anyone who knows me well knows that I had a fondness for the beach. I'm OK not living right next to it (been there, done that) but I need to be within a relatively short distance. And of course the prices of waterfront living here in Southern California are pretty astronomical, so for now that precludes my living oceanfront...and perhaps forever!
One of the great things about the Carlsbad area where I live is the close proximity to miles of beaches. And with the weather here you can pretty much enjoy the beaches all year long. Soth carlsbad state Beach is very popular … (6 comments)

southern california: Market Data for FEBRUARY and MARCH 2007 - Cardiff, CA - 04/15/07 10:23 AM
Here are the summary market statistics from the MLS for Cardiff for February and March 2007.
The inventory is Cardiff remains somewhat limited, and the number of homes for sale in Cardiff has been fairly consistent, as is the rate of sales. There is less than a 4 month supply of attached homes, and less than a 6-month supply of attached homes. Prices tend to move up and down each month, which appears to be due to the small inventory, so that the median is affected dramatically by the homes sold that month.
Similarly, because of the number of sales, the average … (2 comments)

southern california: Idyllwild, California - A Hiker's Paradise - 04/02/07 03:22 AM

I spent part of the weekend in Idyllwild, an arts town in the Santa Rosa Mountains, about 90 miles inland. The town is also known for offering some of the best hiking around (next time, perhaps).

These photos are of Suicide Rock, as seen from Humber Park, the start of one of the more difficult trails in the area. While we didn't see any, this peak is a popular rock climbing challenge.
I posted an article about Idyllwild on my Fans of Coastal San Diego blog if you are interested in reading more about this cool town.

southern california: Market Data for JANUARY 2007 - Cardiff, CA - 02/14/07 04:11 PM
Here are the summary statistics from the MLS for Cardiff-by-the-Sea for January 2007.
There are a few changes from the previous month that are worth noting, however keep in mind that we are looking at a small sample of data over 31 days, so you cannot derive a reliable trend. It is best to watch the trends over a multi-month period to gain a better idea of what the market is actually doing.
The inventory in Cardiff was smaller than it was in December (where it had also dropped from November 2006). We see that the absorption rate is well below 6 months for … (1 comments)

southern california: Market Data for JANUARY 2007 - Encinitas, CA - 02/12/07 10:58 AM
Here are the summary statistics from teh MLS for Encinitas for January 2007.
As you review these, please keep in mind that the data are based on only 1 month of information, and a limited number of sales. Thus it is to be expected that the median price, for example, may have shifted a bit, since December data are based on a full year of sales (most of the homes sold were under $1 million; and as you probably know 50% were below $780K which is the median point). The more important thing to keep in mind are the trends as you … (2 comments)
