dekalb: Wayback Wednesday... Car Show THIS Weekend... - 05/04/11 05:33 PM
Image by lane.bailey via Flickr Kind of odd that for a "Wayback" post I would talk about an upcoming car show...  But the show happens around the first Saturday in May each year... and so THIS Saturday is the day.
Smokerise Baptist Church is having their 11th Annual Smokerise Car Show on Saturday from 9am until 3pm.  Registration runs from 9am until Noon... so there might be a few cars that don't show up until late.  Judging runs from Noon until 3pm.
And check out this link for pictures from last year's show.  There were some pretty cool rides on hand... … (2 comments)

dekalb: Photo Friday... Hiking in the Sky - 01/07/11 02:07 PM
Testing his fear of heights... This is the new thing.  Each Friday, I will feature a photo.  Many will be local.  Some may be real estate related.  Others will be definately not local, and might not be related to real estate.  Cars, people, vacation, homes, garages, tools... fun times.  Just about anything might make the cut.
Since Flashback Friday and Wayback Wednesday have been highlighting posts from 1 and 2 years ago, I have covered posts for the last several years.  Wayback Wednesday will continue, and will feature posts from either one or two years ago that week.

dekalb: Social Media Breakfast - Atlanta, April 22nd - 04/18/10 04:09 PM
It's the sensation that is sweeping the nation... OK, it is just sweeping Atlanta's northern arc...
Social Media Breakfast - Atlanta.
Each month, on the 3rd and 4th Thursday, we get together to talk about responsible and ethical ways to leverage social networking for business.  From FaceBook Fan pages to Twitter, Foursquare and Posterous, we are touching on all of the newest and best ways to connect with our clients and customers.
Northwest...

dekalb: Smokerise Baptist Church Car Show - May 1st - 04/06/10 01:43 AM
It is time again for the Smokerise Baptist Church Car Show.  This will be the 12th annual show; it started in 1999.
Last year, despite weather that was challenging (causing the show to be delayed a week, and still raining at various times through the day), some very cool vehicles came out for the show.  In addition to cars and trucks, there were some cool vintage motorcycles.
Here is a little taste of the action from 2009.

Registration is from 9am until noon.  Judging runs from noon until 3pm.  The awards ceremony is at 3pm.  The vehicles are available for … (2 comments)

dekalb: Flashback Friday and the County Assessors facing reality - 02/05/10 07:56 AM
Last year I wrote about Senate Bill 55 in the Georgia Senate.  Basically, the bill required the Counties to include foreclosures in assessments.  Previously, assessments for taxes excluded foreclosures, so they (falsly?) increased values and tax revenue to the counties.
While that makes it tough for the counties, it is a needed break for home owners.  The counties complained that they would lose revenues... well, the people are losing revenue, too.  They have to suck it up.
In the last year, the bill quietly passed and was signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue.
Here is the link to the original … (5 comments)

dekalb: Sustaining Urban Villages – Brockett Elementary Outdoor Classroom - 01/09/10 05:40 AM
Mrs. GarageGuy and I had the opportunity earlier this week to visit with Brendon Barclay, Executive Director of Sustaining Urban Villages.  Along with a score of other adults and kids (mostly homeschoolers…), we had volunteered our morning to help with the construction of an outdoor classroom.
The purpose of the outdoor classroom is multi-fold.  In addition to learning about the biology of the forest, it is the perfect setting to learn about the interconnectedness of the environment… and it is even a pleasant place to study math or reading.

Previously, during a national 4-H Club event in Atlanta, 50 4-H … (0 comments)

dekalb: Flapjacks and Flicks... Northlake Festival... - 10/24/09 04:38 PM
My son's Kindergarten teacher and some of his classmates families gathers this morning at the Movie Tavern at Northlake Festival in Tucker.  It is right by Northlake Mall... look for the giant tower in the parking lot.
The reason for the gathering was Flapjacks and Flicks (pdf) and Where the Wild Things Are...

On the menu is a drink and unlimited pancakes...  The price is reasonable... considering the breakfast involved.  We each had a couple of plates of pancakes (3 pancakes a plate), and a fairly big soft drink.  The pancakes were pretty good.
Now, I am a "popcorn and … (3 comments)

dekalb: Stone Mountain Highland Games this weekend - 10/14/09 02:38 PM
Image by stevehdc via Flickr Each year, during the third weekend in October, Scots gather in the meadow at Stone Mountain Park.  For 37 years the Stone Mountain Highland Games have not only provided cool athletic competition, but also a great musical performances and social interactions.
I have been to a few of the events over the years and enjoyed watching athletic events like the Caber Toss (this is throwing a telephone pole, kids…), the Hammer Throw and the Sheaf Toss.
I’m also a sucker for bagpipe music.
Hit up the Stone Mountain Highland Games website for more info.  Events start … (4 comments)

dekalb: SRBC Car Show delayed… May 16th - 05/02/09 04:55 PM
The Smoke Rise Baptist Church Car Show, scheduled for today was delayed by weather.  Overnight rains forced the organizers to alter the date, fearing more poor weather.
A few cars showed up this morning, but apparently the website and email list was pretty effective at getting out the word.
One of the cars that was there this morning was this beautiful Shelby GT500 clone.  Gotta love a 428 Cobra Jet.

dekalb: SRBC Car Show, May 2nd - 04/27/09 01:08 PM
As one door closes, another opens in its place.
As I started to look over upcoming events, I ran across a blurb that the Snellville Days 'Orphan Vehicle Association' Car Show had been canceled due to "unforeseen circumstances."  I have no idea what those circumstances might be, and I hope that the OVA is able to recover and present the show again next year.
But, as a car guy looking for someplace to take the boys, I ran across a replacement.  Smoke Rise Baptist Church has been holding a Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show since 1999.  And the date this year … (5 comments)

dekalb: Social Media Breakfast? Atlanta? Want to? - 04/23/09 09:15 AM
While surfing around some of my RE.net friends, I ran across this link on Teresa Boardman's blog...  I was intrigued...
I like breakfast...
I like social media...
I like networking...
I like learning new stuff...
So, I got in touch with the guy that started it all, and asked if he knew of anyone trying to put together a program in Atlanta.  Bryan Person had recieved a couple of enquiries, but nothing had been put together.
Atlanta is a social town... and we have lots of media, technology and breakfast.  So, I think this is something I would like to try … (3 comments)

dekalb: Cities and Counties may be forced to recognize REALISTIC values - 02/06/09 07:08 AM
I just ran across a story in the AJC about a bill before the legislature that would force cities and counties to not ignore foreclosures when they are appraising homes for tax purposes.
Basically, currently and historically, cities and counties don't count "distressed sales" when they calculate the value of a property for tax purposes.  When the market is rocking, that is fine... there aren't that many of them in relation to other sales.  But that isn't the case currently. There are subdivisions and neighborhoods that have as many as a third of the homes in foreclosure, and almost that many … (3 comments)

dekalb: Hanging out with cars... - 06/14/08 03:58 PM
I love my niche. I get to hang out with cars and the people that like them.
So, Tucker is one of the suburb communities here. It is small-town America... minutes from big city. And Main Street is only a few minutes from my house. One Saturday each month through most of the year, the cars gather... and their people, too.

On July 12th they will have the next Tucker cruise-in.
Even though there were severe thunderstorms that rolled through the area earlier in the evening (made me late for the event), there were still 20+ cars that … (11 comments)

dekalb: Aftershock... or not so much - 01/17/08 07:36 AM
A friend of mine forwarded a Moody's study that was called "Aftershock - A study of the post Mortgage Meltdown."  I went through it, and most of it is pretty dark... but then I started to notice something.  The maps didn't look that bad.  Ok, they didn't look that bad for the Southeast in general, or for the area around Atlanta, GA in particular.  It isn't all happy, happy, joy, joy.
The first map is a map of the depth of correction for different areas around the country.  Green = good, red = bad...
The red areas are forecast to have … (3 comments)

dekalb: Good Bread, Good Meat... - 11/27/07 02:54 PM
Every once in a while, I need to wander off on a tangent. Tonight, while driving back from the initial meeting for volunteers at the NHL All-Star Game, I drove by Fat Matt's Rib Shack (and let's not forget the Chicken Shack next door). So... I got to thinking about some of the great places I have been lucky enough to eat at here in Atlanta. I know it isn't about real estate, but we live here... and we have to eat... and if we are going to eat, we should eat well. I guess I should start with Fat Matt's. … (5 comments)

dekalb: Thanksgiving and parades... - 11/22/07 02:16 AM
I've been watching some of the NBC and CBS coverage of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  My wife is a (semi)reformed band geek, so she wanted to see the parade.  Also, since WCC (World's Cutest Child) likes parades, we had a triple reason to tune in (1 for the wife, and 2 for the kid).
So, we tuned in, looking forward to seeing some floats and some bands.  But, what do we get?  Broadway show tunes and promos for upcoming NBC shows...  Maybe CBS will have some of the actual parade...  Nope.  Instead, the cast of CBS's Daytime programming just … (0 comments)

dekalb: Can we ease the water shortage? - 11/17/07 03:54 PM
It looks like there is an idea to do just that.
If the US Fish and Wildlife Service signs off, the water coming off Lake Lanier could be dramatically cut.  Right now, we have about 79 days left.  If this plan goes through, there would be a reduction in the Apalachicola River of about 10%, but the outflow from Lanier could be cut more than that... maybe even more than a year.
So, we'll see what this does for the drought situation.  Of course part of the problem is that the USFWS hasn't decided when they'll decide...  Of course, it … (0 comments)

dekalb: Client Gateway for Buyers... a cool bonus - 11/05/07 12:09 PM
One of the great features I offer to buyers is the Client Gateway. If you aren't familiar, it is a custom private webpage that lists all of the properties that meet the criteria we decide on. As new listings are entered into the MLS, they show up in the Client Gateway the next morning. The example shown is a Gateway that I have set up to keep an eye on new listings of homes with 4 or more car garages in Gwinnett County, GA. A great feature of the Client Gateway is the ability to organize the properties. While reviewing the … (2 comments)

dekalb: Abandon all hope, Ye who enter Atlanta's roads... - 10/30/07 08:27 AM
Tomorrow is Halloween.  Don't drive.  Seriously, the scariest thing in Atlanta tomorrow will be the traffic.
It won't be bad in the morning, but coming home will NOT be fun.  After about 2:00, until around 9:00, the highways and side streets will be crazy.  It won't just be the little pirates and ghosts running around collecting candy, either.  It is the same every year.
There are the adult parties, the kid parties, the trick or treating and then that special something else... people go nuts.
Mark my words.  Take off early (I'm thinking just before lunch) and go home.  Dress your … (2 comments)

dekalb: Are you a first time buyer willing to be on TV? - 08/26/07 03:21 PM
Every once in a while, we fall into an opportunity.  Here is one if you qualify, and are selected.
There is a new program that is looking to film first time home-buyers as they visit homes, make a selection, and then offer for a house.  Everyone gets a shot at their fifteen minutes of fame.  Filming will be in Atlanta beginning next month and continuing in October.
Obviously, I can't guarantee that any particular person will be selected.  But, if you are interested, and not currently working with a real estate agent, email me for details.  The production company won't pay … (0 comments)
