History of a Painting - River Street, Savannah, GA.

Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
While living in north Georgia in the 1980's, one of my favorite Art shows that I attended, was in south Georgia on River Street in Savannah.  The show was along the edge of the River, opposite all the shops and restaurants.  The street was still cobblestone as it was decades ago.  The buildings used to be warehouses, convenient for the shipping trade.
The painting is of one of the typical buildings made from stone and rock, at the north end of the street. The wrought iron stairs … (30 comments)

History of a Painting - "The Coconut Tree",
Florida Keys - Islamorada

Islamorada - "a village of the Islands" is located on the islands of Tea Table Key, which is located in the Florida Keys. While exhibiting in an Arts & Crafts Festival there, I was looking up at the coconuts hanging at the top of the tree.  While laying on my back I took my camera and shot up at the tree.  The following year I returned with the painting and prints of the painting, to display and sell at the festival.  Returning to the Florida … (6 comments)

History of a Painting - "The Barber Tonics",
Chesterton, Indiana.

Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
While spending my time gathering informtion and traveling around the country, I decided to paint a series of four paintings for each subject.  One of the subjects was Barber Related. In Chesterton, Indiana, while exhibiting at one of the Arts Festivals, I visited a barber shop, located at the end of the street. On the shelf were some barber related items on display. In the middle of it was Hopalong Cassidy hair tonic. I had never heard or seen that tonic.  The owner said he … (11 comments)

History of a Painting -
"The Pelican Diner"
St. Pete Beach, Florida

Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
The familiar style Silver Diner, at 7501 Gulf Blvd, in St. Pete Beach, Florida opened in 1951 and became an icon of American History for decades. In the 1990's, I participated in several street festivals, located within a block of the diner. Everyone that ate at the diner seemed to know each other, because of the morning rituals of breakfast or lunch.  I took many pictures of the diner after the show closed and returned the next year with the painting and prints, which were … (14 comments)

History of a Painting - A & W Drive-in,
Taylor, Michigan.

Acrylic painting by Larry Johnston©
When exhibiting at Art Shows and Festivals, I tried to have a painting that the locals could identify with, so I would scan the area after the shows and take pictures of interesting places. I had been in the show in Wyandotte, Michigan for years and painted several places near there.
One of the places I painted, was the A & W Drive-in, located in Taylor, Michigan.  It was a typical design for that restaurant in the 1950's that I remembered.  It was … (12 comments)

History of a Painting -
"The Lantern".

Acrylic painting by Larry Johnston©
While traveling in Central Georgia, we had just finished a show in Pine Mountain, Georgia and as we were driving down the highway, we saw a house that was more than an antique shop.  We called it the junk shop.  It had almost everything you could think of, that was of no value. I took some pictures while I was there and later painted a few of the items.
One of those items was hanging from a nail on the wall. "The lantern" painting became just one … (14 comments)

Established in 1932, Angels Diner is the oldest diner in the State of Florida. Palatka is located 44 miles east of Gainsville and is open 24 hours.  They even serve breakfast at any time. Besides up to one pound hamburgers, they are also known for their freshly made Onion Rings. (Not Frozen).  You can also order Hot Dogs, Fried Chicken and Catfish. The diner also has outside covered seating.
Gainsville has several big Street Art Shows per year, which I exhibited at both.  Angels was a big hit after … (9 comments)

 "The Fire Truck"

While traveling around the country exhibiting at hundreds of Art shows and festivals, One of the best in the Country was the Mountain State Arts & Crafts Festival, in Ripley, West Virginia. It was rated #1 in the Country by Sunshine Artist Magazine a number of years ago.
As I returned to this show in July of each year with new paintings, I kept seeing this old fire truck just sitting out in a field.  You might say that it's days of fighting fires were over and … (7 comments)
