Southwood is not one of those neighborhoods that has a fancy entrance sign. Instead, it quietly sits off of Belle Chasse Highway in Gretna, off of the radar of people who aren't from the West Bank...a little hidden gem of a neighborhood with well kept homes and yards.
The majority of the homes are ranch style single stories, although there are a few 2 story models sprinkled on streets with names like Sugarpine, Cottonwood and Firethorn. This year was the first one in a long time that I wasn't able to attend all three days of the annual Heritage Festival in Gretna LA. But, despite the fact that I missed the final day, I was still able to get some pictures and video of all of the festivities. The festival seems to get bigger every year, but still manages to keep that small town feel that I love so much. Hope you enjoy the photos!

gretna: Petite Cupcakes and Events Opens in Gretna LA

Yesterday was the soft opening of Petite Cupcakes in Gretna and the ladies were nice enough to allow me to take a sneak peek during their last minute preparations for the grand opening of their location at 2766 Belle Chasse Highway in Gretna.
The store was filled with cupcakes and a whirlwind of activity as they were frosting and decorating pan after pan of hand held goodies.

Up until the crazy post Katrina market of 2006, we really considered ourselves insulated from the real estate woes that so much of the rest of the U.S. was experiencing. Developed in the 1980s, the Park Place subdivision is located in Jefferson Parish, in Gretna, Louisiana. A collection of condos and single family homes make up this community of well kept residences. More than 20 years after the first owner moved in, the neighborhood has matured, with many homes boasting mature shade trees and some beautiful landscaping. Whew! Another festival has come to a close and it had to be the biggest one yet if the sales at the Krewe of Choctaw booth were any indication. Thankfully, we had more volunteers this year to help out, so I was able to wander a little bit more and eat a whole bunch more...I'm holding the city of Gretna responsible for the 5 pounds that I'm sure I gained in the last three days. Before I head back over to Gretna for the final day of the Heritage Festival, I thought I would share some photos from Saturday. The weather was gorgeous, the food was incredible and music was being played on 7 different stages all day and into the night. I missed the big name acts, since I was working at the Krewe of Choctaw booth, but I did manage to take a stroll around and catch some of the local artists (who are my favorite anyway) and sample some of the dishes being put out by the other non-profit organizations. Garden Park is a well established and high demand neighborhood located inside the city limits of Gretna, Louisiana. Winding, tree lined streets and a range of home ages make it a very pleasing place to call home. The neighborhood is actually divided into 2 sections, Garden Park on the south side of the Expressway, and Old Garden Park on the north side. Mature trees and some fabulous landscaping line the streets. Conveniently located, it's a hop, skip and jump to get to the New Orleans Central Business District, NAS JRB New Orleans, NSA New Orleans or the Manhattan shopping corridor.
