communication: Did they mean what you thought you heard? - 02/26/19 12:29 PM
I have been reading a book by Celeste Headlee, We need to talk. Something I read in there, and I will paraphrase: Do not presume that because you are both speaking English you mean the same things with the words you choose and speak.
My wife is from the Netherlands, so automatically I know she is smarter than me because she speaks English very well, plus German, and some French, and of course Dutch. Unfortunately, many English speakers speak well, English and that is it, oh yes, LOUDER ENGLISH as well, because that will help them to be understood. My mother came … (22 comments)

communication: Communication or not - 01/24/17 09:54 AM
In honor of Belly Laugh Day, which I learned about from Kathy Streib I was inspired to write this post.
A lot has been written about communication, making yourself clear and understanding what the other party in a conversation is talking about or asking for in some cases. Repeating it back so there is clarity is another great way to ensure this. We all have great examples of misunderstanding, and I am not sure if you know about Mrs Mallaprop, who was a character in a play who always used the wrong word that sounded like the one she replaced but totally … (9 comments)

communication: What's your point? - 02/12/15 10:20 PM
What's your point?
I am trying to listen more, but find the more I listen, the more people like to talk, and talk and talk. I know the premise that the more you let people talk the more they like you, but I am actually happy to be liked a little less if they would just stop talking.
Many people talk because they want affirmation, they want you to listen and that makes them feel good in themselves. They may not actually have a lot to say, but they say it many different ways. I know.
The most confusing thing I … (4 comments)

communication: Answer the phone! - 08/02/14 01:27 AM
Answer the phone!
In the last week I have read some blogs about answering the phone. It always frustrates me as a Main Line Realtor when agents don't answer their phone, even more when you cannot leave a message because their voice mail is full. Exactly home many messages do you need to get before your voice mail is full?
Sometimes I understand you can be kicking back and relaxing, enjoying some time off and the phone goes. Do you answer or not?
When our son was in Iraq we always had our phones on, we never knew when he might be able … (7 comments)

communication: Names, what to do about them! - 01/26/12 09:35 AM
In the Real Estate business getting your clients name right is quite important, especially when completing documents. It is one of the reasons I always write clients names out and check that I have spelled it correctly with them and got any middle names as well.
I have never been a great one for remembering names, but writing them out is a great help. Recently I was contacted by a potential client who was moving from abroad and had chatted with the wife, we shall call her Barbara on the phone and put her in touch with my mortgage provider so … (4 comments)

communication: How important is communication? - 11/29/11 05:33 AM
Be it in your marriage or acting as an agent for a buyer or seller communication is important, but how important? Many arguments within marriages are due to bad communication, mis-communication or lack of communication. Likewise in a real estate deal most problems can be solved through communicating effectively, making sure everyone understands what is happening and when.
Bad news is never good to relay, but it is often necessary for a buyer and especially a seller to hear what is happening, but also to keep your fellow agent on the other side informed is important. I am in the middle … (1 comments)
