june 19: How Much Do You Know About Juneteenth June 19? - 06/19/19 12:36 PM
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, is an American holiday celebrating the elimination of slavery. It is always held on June 19th.
Back on this date in 1862,  U.S. Congress prohibited slavery in the United States and territories, nullifying Dred Scott v. Sandford.
Due to the isolation of Texas from many of the other states (and the lack of the Internet!) it wasn't until 1865 that slaves in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom.
Since then, the anniversary of this formal announcement of freedom is officially celebrated in Texas and 41 other contiguous states on June 19 annually as Juneteenth.
