Back on May 1, 1785, Kamehameha I, the king of Hawaii, defeated  Kalanikupule and established the united Kingdom of Hawaii. Under him the Hawaiian islands were united under one ruler for the first time. This event is celebrated as Lei Day and Kamehameha Day in Hawaii. In Honolulu, Kamehameha's statue is decorated with many leis in his honor. A similar statue is displayed in the U.S. Capitol building.

While May Day  (the first of May) is celebrated with flowers, fresh air and dancing around the maypole in Germany and other countries, in Hawaii, May Day is Lei Day.
Lei Day celebrates native Hawaiian and Pacific Island culture, particularly with colorful flower leis.
